West Indies v India 1st Test Tips, Predictions and Preview - Will India adapt to red ball cricket?

A first Test in eight months will be a challenge to the Indian batsmen looking to get into their groove in the first Test against West Indies ahead of the start of their World Test Championship match in North Sound from Thursday.

India warmed up with a three-day match against West Indies ‘A’. After losing the ODI series 2-0, the hosts are taking this Test series very seriously. Legendary Brian Lara has been roped in to work with the players and it remains to be seen if that is enough to change status quo.

West Indies

The hosts were last seen in the series against England in February that the Windies won 2-1. The lack of wins in the ODI format is not a huge threat, but is nevertheless a concern to be worried about.

The presence of Test specialists Kraigg Brathwaite, Shane Dowrich and Shai Hope is a big plus for the hosts. All-rounder Roston Chase enjoyed facing India when the ‘Men in Blue’ while burly all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall go his maiden call-up. Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach will look the rattle the visitors with pace.

India

Comprehensive performance in the warm-up match signalled India’s intentions. Cheteshwar Pujara looked in good nick, while everyone else chipped in. With Rahul and Mayank Agarwal sure to start the innings, it could be a toss-up between Rahane and Rohit Sharma for one middle-order slot.

India’s bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma give them an edge. Presence of a strong spinning contingent, led by Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav makes India a very strong contender to start the series with a win.

Match Up

On form and recent history alone, India start as favourites. With Pujara and Kohli in the side, the absence of a strong opening unit has been overcome. The Windies have a team that can challenge the visitors for long spells of game, but might come up short at critical junctures.

History & Statistics

  • Windies have lost five of their last seven Tests.
  • Windies have won four of their last five home Tests (W4, L1).
  • The last time Windies have lost two home matches in a row was July 2016.
  • India have won four of their last six Tests (W4, D1, L1).
  • India have lost seven of their last 12 away Tests (W4, D1, L7).
  • India haven’t lost in West Indies since May 2002 (W4, D7).
  • India have six of their last eight H2Hs (W6, D2).
  • India haven’t lost to West Indies since May, 2002.

Key Players

West Indies bring their Test specialists to the core and will hope to keep the Indians guessing. For Jason Holder's men to survive, the Windies need to keep Pujara and Kohli quiet. The hosts have the edge, even if their recent H2H isn’t poor.
