The business end of the 2019 ICC World Cup is nearing and we have some exciting matches lined up including when the West Indies take on India in Manchester on Thursday.

After starting the tournament on a high with a superlative win over Pakistan, West Indies have lost their next four with the game against South Africa washed out.

India, on the other hand, remain one of the two unbeaten sides, with four wins out of five. With some crucial encounters coming up, the ‘Men in Blue’ wouldn’t want to risk qualification and will target a win.

West Indies

The loss to New Zealand in the previous match was not just narrow, but also heart-breaking for the Windies. The aggressive top-order batting of Shimron Hetmyer (171 runs, SR 110.32) is a template that the side follows all through.

The injury to Andre Russell means the side will now look to get the most out of their other all-rounders Carlos Brathwaite and Jason Holder. There is enough spunk in the side to beat India, but the lack of consistency makes them a hard team to back.

India

The scare against Afghanistan was enough to bring life in their campaign, but India showed that holding nerves in crucial phases is a hallmark of this side. The batsmen struggled in the last game, but the top-order looks pristine with Rohit Sharma (320 runs, SR 94.95) and Virat Kohli (244 runs, SR 102.09) leading the charge.

Jasprit Bumrah’s calm head has won plaudits over the past year or so and he continues to lead the show in England. With Mohammad Shami filling the vacuum left by Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s injury and the wrist spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal dominating the middle overs, India look to have a balanced attack to go for the kill.

Match Up

West Indies need to keep winning to cling on to their faint hopes of top-four qualification. Inconsistent batting order and an ineffective bowling unit, with a lack of penetrative middle-overs bowler, remain their roadblocks.

India’s middle-order continues to bother captain Kohli, who otherwise has a unit that has ticked most of the boxes. Should the top-order misfire, there could be considerable pressure on the likes of Kedar Jadhav and Vijay Shankar, but for now the side looks a bit more settled than the Windies.
