Dustin Johnson poses with the winners trophy after winning the U.S. Open in 2016

The US Open, golf's second major of the year, will take place at Shinnecock Hills in New York between 14-17 June. Who will emerge victorious on the famous links?

It is the fifth time the course has staged the US Open, the most recent being in 2004 when Retief Goosen was crowned champion.

Brooks Koepka will be the defending champion having won his first major last year at Erin Hills, while a host of other former winners are hoping to win the US Open once again.

Who will conquer the unique Shinnecock Hills links? We pick our three players to back for US Open victory.

Dustin Johnson

It is hard to leave Dustin Johnson out of the mix. His victory in the St Jude Classic last weekend took him back into the world number one spot and signalled just how in form the big hitting American actually is. His tournament figures for 2018 reads: 1, 9, 2, 16, 7, 10, 16, 17, 8 and 1 and his consistency has to be admired. It is two years since Johnson won his first - and only - major in the US Open at Oakmont, but he can certainly go close to adding to it at Shinnecock Hills, which should suit his game. Johnson plays links courses well - underlined by three top-10 finishes in The Open Championship - and the Long Island venue should hold no demons for him.

Justin Rose

Englishman Justin Rose has rediscovered some of his best golf in recent weeks, following victory in the Fort Worth Invitational with a solid sixth place finish in the Memorial Tournament. Now ranked number three in the world, Rose is a past US Open winner having triumphed at Merion in 2013. He has missed the cut in the last two US Opens but arrives at Shinnecock Hills in better form than he did in both of those years and, with a solid enough record on links courses, he looks at good each-way bet this time around.

Rafael Cabrera-Bello

Rafael Cabrera-Bello is a big price for a player in good form at present. The Spaniard's last three events on either side of the Atlantic ended with 17th place in The Players Championship, eighth in the BMW PGA Championship and fourth in the Italian Open. He is certainly in good nick heading to New York. Having made the cut in three of the four US Opens he has played in, I'm expecting a big performance this year. Fourth in The Open last year, his game suits links courses and Cabrera-Bello is the value bet of the tournament.
