Adelaide Cup Tips - Maher, Eustace and Winks to claim Morphettville showpiece

Bondeiger wins the Inglis Cup at Caulfield

Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace are poised to claim Monday’s Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville when James Winks jumps back aboard Bondeiger.

Winks steered the seven-year-old son of War Pass to a comfortable victory in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville on March 2, and the pair look perfectly placed to go back-to-back at South Australian headquarters.

Having finished last of eight when first-up over 1700m, Bondeiger then finished a close-up 3rd to Tarquin and Al Galayel over 2000m at Caulfield.

He worked home strongly next time in the Torney Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley and was only 1.4 lengths from Vengeur Masque, but he seemed to lack fitness at the end and was open to plenty of improvement.

Despite carrying top weight of 57kg in the Lord Reims and settling at the rear of the field, Bondeiger wound up on the turn and was far too good for his rivals as he cruised to the front and was eased down with 50m to go and crossed the line with his ears pricked in a canter.

He ran 11.38, 11.45, 11.46 and 12.14 for his final 200m splits for the race, and those numbers lines up extremely well against other form races.

The Michael Hickmott-trained Franked was ultra-impressive winning over 2400m at Morphettville last start and he’ll attract plenty of support with Australian Cup-winning jockey Jamie Kah taking the ride, but he ran 11.39, 11.31, 11.60 and 12.15 and lines up poorly against Bondeiger.

While their finals splits are nearly identical, Bondeiger drops 3kg and Franked goes up 2kg, and considering Bondeiger was eased down with 50m to go, his final 200m split would have been far superior.

Tasmanian star Eastender comes to Adelaide having defeated Fabrizio and Lamborghini in the Launceston Cup (2400m) where he ran 11.56, 11.14, 11.60 and 12.01.

Admittedly, it’s impossible to line up sectionals from different tracks, but I don’t like the fact Eastender now goes up 1kg and has to carry 58kg, which is 4kg more than Bondeiger.

Surprise Baby strikes me as another top chance, but I don’t like the fact he’s missed a run when playing up in the barriers at Moonee Valley – you simply can’t afford to have an interrupted campaign when heading into a 3200m race.

Bondeiger looks extremely hard to beat from barrier 2, and as long as he can run the trip right out, he should be too classy for them at the weights.
