All-Star Mile Tips - Godolphin to claim inaugural All-Star Mile

Hugh Bowman riding Alizee for a gallop in between Race 1 and 2 at Flemington Racecourse

Racing and breeding giant Godolphin are poised to claim victory in Saturday’s $5 million All-Star Mile (1600m) with Hartnell and Alizee representing the ‘Blue Army.’

Both come through the Futurity Stakes (1400m) which Alizee won in quick time (1:22.48) while Hartnell finished a length back in 3rd place.

It’s worth noting that Hartnell was right on Alizee’s tail as they straightened and she put another length on him from the 300m to 100m marks, before Hartnell took that length back in the final 100m.

But Alizee was caught three deep without cover throughout, and I think the wide run just took it’s toll on her in the final stages – so I think she has Hartnell covered.

Happy Clapper has finished runner-up to Winx in both runs this campaign, and he looms as the obvious danger, but I’m worried about how much that gut-buster took out of him last start.

Mystic Journey also brings extremely strong form lines having won the Australian Guineas (1600m) last start and having comprehensively beaten Fundamentalist last campaign.

Fundamentalist went agonisingly close to beating The Autumn Sun last start in the Randwick Guineas, and many regard him to be one horse that could test Winx.

We can somewhat line the form up between Alizee and Mystic Journey through their 1400m runs at Caulfield.

Mystic Journey won the Jim Moloney Stakes (1400m) in 1:23.33 on the same day Jungle Cat won the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) in 1:22.31.

Jungle Cat defeated Land Of Plenty by a half-head, yet Alizee ran 1:22.48 and beat Land Of Plenty by a length.

So, if we assess the Caulfield performances, Alizee’s effort over 1400m rates six lengths above Mystic Journey.

Happy Clapper has now run 2nd in the quickest Apollo Stakes (1400m) on record, and 2nd in the quickest Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) ever run, so surely, he’s the danger to Alizee – but I just can’t get over that extremely tough run last start that may have flattened him.

There will be a lot more early speed in this event, and If Blake Shinn goes for home early again, he’ll find it much harder to hold them off down the long Flemington straight.

Alizee looks ready to show her best fourth-up, and if Hugh Bowman can secure a soft run in transit, she can finish off best and make it four in a row this campaign.
