Australian Derby Tips - Chapada the superior stayer

  • With clear running this time, Chapada can dominate Derby

Michael Moroney saddles up two runners in Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m), and I think Chapada looks a good thing.

He should have won the VRC Derby (2500m) at Flemington in the spring but got held up terribly in the straight yet had the audacity to pick himself up again and charge into 3rd place – only a true stayer with a good turn of foot could do that.

He surprised first-up in the CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) when finishing three lengths from the winner, but he disappointed with a last placing in the Australian Guineas (1600m) which was a total forgive run.

The stewards report said Chapada suffered heat distress and an irregular heart rhythm after travelling three wide without cover for the trip – a veterinary clearance was required before racing again.

Moroney took him to Sydney for the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) where he finished 2.5 lengths from The Autumn Sun and stablemate Arrogant who lines up in opposition on Saturday.

Being third-up from a spell without things going to plan in the Australian Guineas, Chapada clocked the quickest split from the 400m to 200m but then peaked and ran the third quickest final 200m behind the winner and runner-up.

He’ll take plenty of improvement from that run, and while most are starting to tire in the straight, Chapada will be charging through the line.

Although Arrogant had the better of Chapada last start, he was rock-hard-fit coming off a New Zealand Derby (2400m) 4th placing, and Chapada should have far more upside.

Kris Lees filly, Frankely Awesome, rates a strong chance, and it’s interesting to note James McDonald jumps aboard after defeating her on Verry Elleegant in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

They ran quicker time and sectionals in the Rosehill Guineas and that form looks stronger, and again it comes back to Chapada having more improvement to come.
