Australian Guineas Tips - Journey to hit Group 1 peak at Flemington

  • Fillies look to have the boys measure.
Anthony Darmanin riding Mystic Journey

It’s not often, if ever, you’d see three fillies at the top of the market in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).

But that’s what we find in 2019 with little splitting Amphitrite and Mystic Journey at $4.20 and $4.80 respectively, while Verry Elleegant is on the fourth line of betting at $9.50 with only Hawkshot ($7.50) ahead of her in the market.

On face value, Verry Elleegant looks over the odds considering she did a lot wrong and charged home behind Amphitrite in the Vanity Stakes (1400m).

However, she often does a lot wrong and she’s nowhere near as professional as Amphitrite, while she’s also a dual acceptor for the Surround Stakes at Randwick.

Amphitrite won the Thousand Guineas (1600m) in a time of 1:35.67 which was marginally slower than The Autumn Sun in the Caulfield Guineas, but she still would have beaten the rest of the boys on times so there’s no doubt she’s up to competing against the boys.

Amphitrite’s winning time in the Vanity Stakes (1:22.14) was just outside The Inevitable’s winning time (1:21.99) in the CS Hayes Stakes, but she now drops 4kg on that run and is open to many lengths improvement second-up, while The Inevitable goes up half a kilo and should already be close to peak fitness.

Having said that, The Inevitable’s run was massive as he was caught three wide without over for the trip, copped a bump on the turn and took over early in the straight and still managed to fend off all the challengers.

Stars Of Carrum and Extra Brut were held up in the straight and can significantly improve on that effort, and I rate that pair and The Inevitable as the best from the CS Hayes.

Ringerdingding found Alizee and co a bit tough last start in the Futurity Stakes (1400m) but he can also improve over further as he gets back to Flemington.

Hawkshot was an impressive winner last start over 1400m at Caulfield where he ran four lengths slower than Ringerdingding did, and considering Hawkshot may try to lead again, he’ll be a sitting duck for much tougher opposition this time and I’m willing to risk him.

It’s a bitter harder to try and line up Mystic Journey with the others but we know how classy she is.

She did beat Fundamentalist by 2.25 lengths at Moonee Valley, and Fundamentalist was narrowly defeated by Amphitrite the start earlier in the Thousand Guineas and she also finished 1.2 lengths from Amphitrite in the Vanity.

In her two most recent runs in Melbourne, Mystic Journey took a while to build momentum and was really running away from them on the line so I can’t wait to see what she’ll do at Flemington.

She’s had two lead-up wins in Tasmania to bring her up to fitness, and from barrier 1, she’s sure to enjoy a soft run in transit.

As long as Anthony Darmanin can get clear at the top of the straight and get an uninterrupted run, I think she’s the one to beat.
