Competition is fierce within the Australian jockey ranks as the upper-echelon of riders try to maintain their enviable positions while the up-and-coming hoops fight tooth and nail to get noticed.

Without doubt, riders such as William Pike, Hugh Bowman, Craig Williams, Jamie Kah and Jeff Lloyd command attention in their respective states, but is following any of these leading riders profitable?

Interestingly, Lloyd is the only jockey among the top 10 in the country to have returned a positive Return On Investment (ROI) for his followers.

But at 1.82% ROI for the season, Lloyd backers barely have their noses in front.

Here are three jockeys to follow in the upcoming season that have returned strong profits for their followers over the past 12 months.

CHRIS PARNHAM:

With 106 winners from 654 at an average price of $7.90, Parnham recorded a higher ROI (28%) than any other jockey with substantial rides. Although most of his form for the past 12 months is from Perth, Parnham is building good relationships with some of Victoria’s leading stables and his form in the eastern state should only continue to improve.

Parnham’s sweet spots:
Track conditions – Fast to Good
Best Distances – 1000m to 1300m
Successful Barriers – 1 to 6
Best Tracks – Pinjarra and Echuca
Top Trainers – Tony McEvoy and John McArdle

WANDERSON D'AVILA

Despite hitting a lean patch in recent times with just five wins from his past 100 rides, Far north QLD-based hoop Wanderson D’Avila has been the most profitable for punters in the past 12 months with a tidy 27% ROI. From 623 rides, D’Avila has booted home 85 winners at an average price of $9.35. Based on previous records, he usually excels during spring and summer so keep your eye out for D’Avila in the coming months.

D’Avila’s sweet spots:
Track conditions – Good to Soft
Best Distances – 1000m to 1300m
Successful Barriers – Even spread
Best Tracks – Cairns
Top Trainers – Lyle Wright, Julieann Lancaster and Alwyn Bailey

JORDAN CHILDS:

At 3% ROI it’s hard to get excited about backing each of Childs’ mounts, but his combination with a few leading stables is worth taking notice of. For example, Childs’ ROI for the following trainers reads: Matt Cumani (19.4%), David & B Hayes & T Dabernig (85%) and Grahame Begg (59.6%).

Childs’ sweet spots:
Track conditions – Soft to Heavy
Best Distances – 1300m to 2000m
Successful Barriers – 1 to 3 and 11 to 13
Best Tracks – Seymour, Caulfield and Bendigo
Top Trainers – Matt Cumani, David & B Hayes & T Dabernig and Grahame Begg
