Our Victorian form expert highlights the horses to follow from each race.

Race 1 – Evergreen Turf Plate (1100m) 1:03.41
The Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained OLLIVANDER was a very impressive winner of the opening event. He led throughout to win a recent jumpout, but after being a touch slow to begin on Saturday, he settled around midfield before winding up stronger than the rest. The stable may bring him back for a race on Boxing Day where he will be hard to beat with the benefit of that experience.

Race 2 – Moorookyle Park Handicap (1200m) 1:09.48
Quite a soft win for the Phillip Stokes-prepared TROGIR who settled three pairs back and simply sprinter stronger than the others. He was coming off a four-week break at his fourth run this campaign so probably still has some upside. Stick with him.

Race 3 – Tile Importer Handicap (1440m) 1:25.93
The winner, Kasi Ferasi, had the drop on the tearaway leader while 2nd placed Poet’s Corner and 3rd placed MONTASER got into a bumping dual at the top of the straight. Poet’s Corner was rock-hard-fit at his fifth run this campaign while Montaser won his maiden over 1200m on debut before stepping up to 1440m here. He may have peaked late and will benefit from the run.

Race 4 – Sheamus Mills Bloodstock Handicap (1700m) 1:43.20
The biggest upset of the day with Vinland missing the placings but it was another win for South Australian-based trainers with the Lloyd Kennewell-trained ANGELUCCI scoring a soft win. This was a massive step up in class from his Class 2 win at Gawler the start prior, so he’d obviously trained on well for Kennewell to take him to Melbourne. More wins in store based on that effort. RED CHOUX’S didn’t have the best of luck and made good ground from last on the turn – stick with him also.

Race 5 – Clanbrooke Racing Handicap (1700m) 1:42.85
SHOREHAM looks to have come back well this campaign following a 3rd placing over 1400m and a win over 1700m on Saturday. He generally takes a few runs to find his best but this was a gusty win and he can go on with the job. I’m not convinced GUIZOT gets more than a mile so stay with him for one more run if he drops back in trip.

Race 6 – Blue Star Print Group Handicap (2420m) 2:30.07
A couple of real up-and-coming staying talents to stick with here. The winner, ETAH JAMES was very tough and is likely to go for a spell while the 3rd placed BINT EL BADU was charging home from the rear. Both are nice mares with plenty of upside in the future.

Race 7 – Ladbrokes Open Handicap (1440m) 1:25.17
Two in a row for OZI CHOICE who just kept kicking and had fitness on his side. He can win again in a suitable event but surely doesn’t have any upside

Race 8 – Catanach's Jewellers Handicap (1100m) 1:02.68
The quickest of the three 1100m event on the day was won by CRYSTAL DREAMER who was caught wide without cover but still proved too good. The 4th placed MANOLO BLAHNIQ made good ground down the outside at his second run this time in, and although his breeding suggests he’d be better over more ground, all of his best runs have been over sprint trips – 1200m next time would be ideal.
Race 9 – Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1100m) 1:03.25
I was surprised to see the winner, Creativity, hold onto this race after causing considerable interference to TYKIATO who surged again and was closing strongly. Tykiato was returning from a seven-week let-up and should strip fitter for the run.
