Caulfield Guineas Tips - Can The Autumn Sun be beaten?

  • Who will win the Caulfield Guineas?
Kerrin McEvoy on The Autumn Sun (R), wins the Golden Rose Stakes

It’s not often the best bet of the day goes around in a Group 1 race – unless that horse is Winx – but gee The Autumn Sun looks a good thing in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

The Chris Waller-trained son of son of Redoute’s Choice should be unbeaten in five starts with his only defeat being first-up this campaign where he was blocked for a run and charged home to finish 3rd in the Stan Fox Stakes (1500m).

He was never going to be suited dropping back to 1400m in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes second-up, but he was simply too good for them as he flew home from last to defeat Zousain.

Stepping back up to the mile third-up is ideal, and he looks to be a class above his Caulfield Guineas rivals.

He claimed his first Group 1 when third-up in the JJ Atkins (1600m) on a Heavy track, and I don’t think he’s at his best on rain-affected ground.

Caulfield will be racing as a Good 3 or 4 on Saturday, and The Autumn Sun should get his chance to wind up on the turn and sprint best to claim another Group 1.

Of his opposition, Native Soldier went approximately four lengths slower in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude than Smart Melody did in the fillies’ version on the same day, so it was no surprise to see him give a good kick in the straight and win from Tavisan who led early before handing up to Native Soldier.

Tavisan and Native Soldier look the likely leaders again, but I don’t think Tavisan will hand up the lead this time which is what potentially cost him the win last start.

And with this being the grand final for most of these horses, the race should be genuinely run which will give backmarkers their chance to run on.

Oohood finally broke through for that elusive Group 1 win last start in the Flight Stakes when stepping up to 1600m for the first time, and she has to be among some of the better chances.

However, I can’t see any of these matching the brute power of The Autumn Sun, and with all things being equal, he should be winning.
