Caulfield Stakes Tips - Who will win the toughest event of the day?

  • Waller's mare maps best and has superior sprint.
Unforgotten heads out to the barriers

Saturday’s Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes (registered as the Caulfield Stakes) (2000m) is the toughest race on the Caulfield programme to try and find the winner.

We have international form with the Saeed Bin Suroor-trained Benbatl boasting a win in the Dubai Turf (1800m), Aidan O'Brien’s The Cliffsofmoher having won or placed four of his past six in some of Europe’s best races, as well as Charlie Appleby’s Blair House who was far from disgraced with a 4th placing in the Underwood Stakes (1800m) two weeks ago.

The first three home in the Underwood, Homesman, Tosen Basil and Humidor, again line up in opposition, and Darren Weir’s Naturalism Stakes (2000m) winner Night’s Watch faces his toughest test but looks up to the task.

Chris Waller’s Group 1-winning pair, D’Argento and Unforgotten, come to Melbourne having finished 2nd and 3rd behind Hartnell in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and both should appreciate the step up in trip.

Harlem, Invictus Prince and Sedanzer make up the remainder of the field and are the three outsiders given little to no hope.

I simply can’t go into this race with any confidence as I think all bar the three outsiders have a genuine chance of winning.

But if we have to narrow it down, I think Benbatl is a horse that improves dramatically with a run under his belt, and whatever he does on Saturday, he will improve on.

Unforgotten meets D’Argento 1kg better at the weights, has drawn better of the pair and looks better suited stepping up in trip based on her programme so far – so I’d have her in front of D’Argento.

Humidor lost a couple of lengths on the turn last start but closed hard late behind Homesman and Tosen Basil, so I’d be inclined to put him ahead of his last start victors.

Blair House closed well too, and you could only assume he’ll take a stack of improvement from the run, but I don’t like the way he maps from barrier 11.

The Cliffsofmoher gets back in his races and is likely to be giving them a headstart as he jumps from barrier 8 and may have to go back to last.

I’m not sure he has the turn of foot to come from behind Unforgotten who should be making a move before the turn and using her brilliant finishing speed to run them down.

My map has Night’s Watch and Unforgotten getting the softest runs in transit around midfield or worse, and with luck in running, that pair can finish best.

With 3kg less and blistering acceleration, I’ve got Unforgotten on top.
