Chautauqua - Stays in the gates again

Chautauqua’s racing future is surely now up in the air as the grey gelding refused to leave the gates for a sixth time.

The multiple Group One winning grey stood there again as the gates opened as the rest of the field headed off.

Rider Tommy Berry did eventually convince the horse to go and has been officially declared a runner, and he was listed as finishing last, beaten 92.7 lengths.

The eight-year-old gelding remains under a racing ban due to his refusal to leave the barriers and this last failure will surely lead to connections to having second thoughts about another spring campaign.

Berry said after the trial that he thought the horse felt better in the stalls and when the gates opened, he thought for a second he (Chautauqua) was going to jump as he pushed forward, but then, as quick as he pushed forward, he then lent back, putting his weight onto his back feet and stayed there.

Trainer Michael Hawkes said, “it is what it is” and discussions will now need to take place over the horse’s future.
