George Main Stakes Tips - Track and distance specialist can make us Happy

Happy Clapper has had eight starts at the famous Randwick mile, missing the placings just once when beaten half a length in the Epsom Handicap.

His other seven runs have resulted in three wins and four 2nd placings, and those efforts include wins in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (2016), Group 1 Epsom Handicap (2017) and Group 1 Doncaster Mile (2018), while his 2nd placings were behind Winx in the Doncaster (2016), It’s Somewhat in the Doncaster (2017), Winx in the George Main (2017) and Winx in the Chipping Norton Stakes (2019).

That is clearly the best Randwick mile form in the country, and it’s why I’m trusting Happy Clapper when he lines up in the Colgate Optic White Stakes (registered as the George Main Stakes) at Randwick on Saturday.

He didn’t impress most with his barrier trial leading into the Winx Stakes (1400m) at his first run this campaign, but I thought he did enough to be rated the top seed in that Group 1 event.

After enjoying the run of the race one out and one back, the evergreen nine-year-old came out to challenge but just couldn’t peg back Samadoubt in what was a tradesman-like performance.

Being a bit older now, he certainly would have needed the run, and the step up to his pet trip second-up looks ideal.

He’s drawn perfectly in gate 4 with Glen Boss taking the ride, and with Samadoubt setting a genuine pace up front again, Happy Clapper is the one to chase him down.

Avilius looms as the danger to the pair, but he’s drawn awkwardly in barrier 8 and may need a bit of luck, while I’d also prefer to see him over further now – maybe we’ll see his best over 2000m next time.
