Lean Mean Machine wins the Run To The Rose

Some strong Melbourne and Sydney form comes together in Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) where finding the winner will be no easy task.

Chris Waller’s pair, Zousain and Lean Mean Machine, head south following 2nd and 5th placings behind The Autumn Sun in the Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), and The Autumn Sun made a mess of them in the Caulfield Guineas.

However, he looked a class above them and clearly was, while there’s nothing to suggest the Sydney sprinters are superior to the Victorians.

Sunlight and Written By both won lead-up races in Sydney before finishing 3rd and 4th respectively in the Golden Slipper (1200m).

Sunlight had absolutely no luck in the Manikato Stakes (1200m) and faces the quick back-up, and the main concern is the fact this is afterthought for trainer Tony McEvoy.

The plan was to send her to the paddock after the Manikato but they are now pushing on seeing she didn’t have a testing run last start.

She beat Written By home in the Golden Slipper and has recently run much quicker time than him over 1200m at Caulfield, including a faster final 600m.

But unlike Sunlight, Written By has been set for this race all along and he can improve on his most recent effort.

It really is a guessing game as to which one will come out on top of that pair, and the market reflects that with each around the $4 mark.

As for Waller’s pair, I think Lean Mean Machine has the better sprint over 1200m, and his first-up win in the Run to the Rose (1200m) was something to be seen.

He settled well back in the run and just exploded past them in the straight.

If Written By and Sunlight test each other up front and overdo it slightly, he could be the one to finish over the top of them.

Hugh Bowman takes the ride from barrier 3, and his patient ride on Brave Smash in the Manikato made all the difference in the end.

I don’t think any of the others can get the better of the aforementioned four, and Written By gets the nod ahead of Sunlight, but I’ll be looking for Lean Mean Machine to swoop late.
