Our expert previews each race on Cox Plate Day including the big feature, which is Race 9 of the afternoon at 5:00pm.

Race 1 - 12:10PM INGLIS BANNER (1000 METRES)
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott won this race last year with Setsuna, and I think they can go back-to-back with ESPAANIYAH lining up in 2018. The I Am Invincible filly was snagged back to the tail as soon as the gates opened in a recent trial at Randwick, but she showed good closing speed under no pressure to make up a stack of ground. Oozes quality and will be hard to beat in an open race with little exposed form.
2nd – Wedgetail
3rd – Biscara
4th – True Serendipity

Race 2 - 12:40PM STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BENDIGO BANK HANDICAP (955 METRES)
The speedy DESERT LASHES is having her first start for Tony McEvoy, and she flew around the Valley on Tuesday indicating she handled the track well. The short 955m trip will suit as she flies the lids and goes flat-chat. Two previous trips to Melbourne have seen her lead and weaken late over 1100m and 1200m, but this race looks ideal. Thermal Current and Badajoz should getting home late but will be giving the mare a start.
2nd – Thermal Current
3rd – Badajoz
4th – Invincible Al

Race 3 - 1:15PM POWERFLO SOLUTIONS STAKES (1600 METRES)
SAVATIANO was a good thing beaten last start after being blocked for a run in the straight and only getting clear once Invincibella had established a winning break. She’s likely to land in the one out one back spot as she steps up to 1600m which suits.
2nd – Princess Posh
3rd – Mrs Gardenia
4th – Shoko

Race 4 - 1:50PM HARROLDS CROCKETT STAKES (1200 METRES)
This is a big step up in class for RAINBOW GIRL but considering she won her maiden narrowly and then won a BM64 next time by four lengths, she’s clearly on the up and could surprise here. She was full of running in the straight before Ben Melham eased her right down at the 50m mark, and with two 1000m runs under her belt, the step up to 1200m look ideal.
2nd – I’m So Sweet
3rd – Assertive Play
4th – Causeway Girl

Race 5 - 2:25PM 1300 AUSTRALIA STAKES (1200 METRES)
Another open affair but I’m happy to stick with SUNSET WATCH who won at this track and trip last start in quicker time than the Scarborough Stakes won by Meryl and the BM90 later in the night that was won by Moonlover. He got tired late when leading all the way but will strip fitter and looks one of the best bets on the programme.
2nd – Wagner
3rd – Spin
4th – Aylmerton

Race 6 - 3:00PM AQUIS FARM FILLIES CLASSIC (1600 METRES)
An extremely tough event with so many legitimate chances but I’m looking for EL DORADO DREAMING to bounce back. Last campaign she was beaten in two maidens before taking out the Group 1 Sires’ Produce (1400m) at her third run. This campaign, she put in an eye-catching run first-up but raced a bit flat second-up in the Thousand Guineas and was beaten a long way from home.
2nd – Fundamentalist
3rd – Music Bay
4th – Anjana

Race 7 - 3:35PM SCHWEPPES CRYSTAL MILE (1600 METRES)
With fitness on his side, I’d love to see CLIFF’S EDGE get back to his old front-running style where he’d break their hearts on the turn and into the straight. He comes out of the Toorak Handicap where he finished 3.5 lengths from stablemate Land Of Plenty after doing way too much early as Hellova Street and then Al Passem pushed ahead on a suicide mission. They weakened to finish 14 and seven lengths off the pace, and Cliff’s Edge was very brave to battle on the way he did. Peak fitness now, goes well at the track and should be able to lead.
2nd – It’s Somewhat
3rd – Siege Of Quebec
4th – Octabello

Race 8 - 4:10PM MCCAFE MOONEE VALLEY GOLD CUP (2500 METRES)
These races aren’t getting any easier – just yet! EGG TART looms as a big chance here after having to make up too much ground in the Craven Plate (2000m) on a Heavy track and just peaking on her run late. Fifth-up, she should be at her peak, and from barrier 3, if Kerrin McEvoy can have her a little closer in the run, she should be finishing hard.
1st – Egg Tart
2nd – The Taj Mahal
3rd – Trap For Fools
4th – Libran

Race 9 - 5:00PM LADBROKES COX PLATE (2040 METRES)
Read our full COX PLATE PREVIEW
1st – Winx
2nd – Benbatl
3rd – Kings Will Dream
4th – Savvy Coup

Race 10 - 5:50PM DRUMMOND GOLF VASE (2040 METRES)
VERRY ELLEEGANT looks a standout on her recent Ethereal Stakes (2000m) win, but there are suggestions Darren Weir will scratch, and if he does, I’m leaning to MICKEY BLUE EYES at big odds. He’s drawn the outside gate and will need some luck, but if he can get in with cover and be produced at the right time, he has a strong turn of foot and can finish over the top of them. Forgive his last start on the Heavy track which he didn’t handle and judge him on his two previous wins.
1st – Verry Elleegant
2nd – Mickey Blue Eyes
3rd – Aramayo
4th – Dealmaker
