Cox Plate Nominations - Winx heads 25 third acceptors

  • Winx aiming for fourth consecutive win in the Cox Plate
  • 25 entries at the third acceptances stage

Just 24 possible rivals remain for superstar mare Winx in her bid to win a fourth successive Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) after she was named among 25 third acceptances.

Having won the past three editions of the Moonee Valley showpiece, the Chris Waller-trained mare remains on track to become the first horse in the 98-year history of the Cox Plate to win the race on four occasions.

As well as Winx, Waller has accepted with three others including the three-year-old The Autumn Sun as well as D’Argento and Unforgotten.

The Autumn Sun could be joined by two other three-year-olds with the Kris Lees-trained filly El Dorado Dreaming and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Thinkin’ Big also among the acceptors.

Darren Weir’s Humidor genuinely tested Winx in last year’s Cox Plate and will be aiming to go one better in 2018 as he spearheads six entries from the leading stable including Danon Liberty, Plein Ciel, Night’s Watch, Kings Will Dream and Mr Garcia.

Five internationals remain in contention with Godolphin’s elite galloper and international invitee Benbatl join by two others for the boys in blue in Blair House and Emotionless, while Aidan O’Brien has Cliffs Of Moher and Rostropovich entered.

Other notable acceptors include Avilius, winner of The Bart Cummings, and last weekend’s New Zealand Group 1 winner Savvy Coup.
