Can Winx notch up another brilliant win?

Australia's most famous 1600m race, The Doncaster Mile (1600m), is set to run and won at Randwick on Saturday, and the $3 million affair has attracted a star-studded field, including the glamour mare, Winx.

Here are the top five contenders in early betting markets for the Doncaster, which is Race 9 on the programme and is scheduled to jump at 5.10PM.

Winx ($1.85 Ladbrokes)

Chris Waller's superstar has won eight on the trot in a streak that has included five wins at Group 1 level. After winning the Epsom (1600m) at this track and distance last spring, the four-year-old then went on to smash her rivals in the Cox Plate (2040m). This campaign she is three from three having taken out the Apollo Stakes (1400m) at her first run back from a spell before cruising home in the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and the George Ryder Stakes (1500m). The major difference this weekend will be the weight she has to carry as, unlike her last few starts, she is back at handicap level. However, the 56.5kg shouldn't provide too many obstacles and we only have to go back to 2012, which was the last time a mare carried a similar weight to victory. That horse was More Joyous, who carted 57kg while the mighty Sunline won with 58kg in 2002. She will be very hard to beat.

Kermadec ($7.00 William Hill)

The 2015 Doncaster winner gets another crack at his stablemate, Winx, after finishing runner up to that horse in the George Ryder on March 19. While the four-year-old has an inferior strike rate to his famous rival, he tends to peak at this stage of his preparation and is 1.5kg better off compared to the last time the two met. The son of Teofilo loves the Randwick mile and was a Group 1 winner twice at the track and distance last year with a win in the George Main Stakes (1600m) to complement his Doncaster triumph. From Barrier 3, he is be poised to go very close.

Happy Clapper ($11 CrownBet)

Happy Clapper comes into this with some impressive form but the question will be whether or not he is up to this class. The lightly raced five-year-old worked his way through the grades at the end of 2015 and took out the Group 2 Viliers Stakes (1600m) just prior to Christmas. He has since had two runs for a 4th in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) before finishing a five length 5th to Winx in the George Ryder, where he was doing his best work late. The son of Teofilo drops a whopping 8.5kg for that effort and can surprise some of his big name rivals on the weekend.

Azkadellia ($11 CrownBet)

The consistent Azkadellia gets her chance for success in a Group 1 after running a series of ripping races at her past few starts. After finishing 3rd in the Myer Classic (1600m) last spring, the Ciaron Maher-trained galloper then resumed with a narrow 2nd at Caulfield in the Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) before taking out the Mannerism Stakes (1400m) at the same venue. Her last run came in the Coolmore Classic (1500m), where she finished 2nd behind Peeping. The four-year-old will settle towards the back of the field, where she is likely to reel of some blistering late sectionals. If she gets the breaks she is in with a chance.

Bow Creek ($14 William Hill)

An interesting contender in this is the Godolpin galloper, Bow Creek. Despite coming into this with some mixed form, the five-year-old could be the value runner in the 14-horse field, provided he jumps out well. He has a habit of being tardily away and this all but cost him at his previous start, which came in the Australian Cup (2000m), where he bombed the start en route to finishing 8th in a slowly run race behind Awesome Rock. Prior to that, the five-year-old looked very good taking out the Peter Young Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield and he is drawn to get a gun run from Barrier 4. An each-way chance.
