Flight Stakes Tips - Funstar can win again

Jockey James McDonald (red cap) rides Funstar to victory (PA Images)

There is very little between Chris Waller's Funstar and the Jamie Richards-prepared Probabeel in Saturday’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

On form and ratings, you simply couldn’t have any of the other four runners to win, however, small fields often throw up rough results due to tactics.

The two best jockeys in the race, James McDonald and Kerrin McEvoy, stick with their leading chances, and it’s hard to see any other hoop outriding them, or any other filly outclassing their pair.

Funstar and Probabeel upset the short-priced favourite, Libertini, last start, and the pair will be out to show that was no fluke as they assert their dominance again.

Probabeel was probably the eye-catching run to most as she was charging home late to just miss and also looks suited stepping up in trip.

However, I think the run of Funstar had more merit, and I’ll be sticking with her on Saturday.

The daughter of Cox Plate winner Adelaide sat just off the speed but came out three wide early as to not get boxed in, and she sustained a strong sprint to outmuscle Libertini while Probabeel enjoyed a soft run along the fence and angled out at the right time to challenge.

Probabeel was never interrupted in her stride, and she had every chance to get past Funstar whose win was gritty to say the least.

From barrier 2, McDonald has the option to let Funstar settle in the spot that best suits her, while McEvoy may be dictated to as he jumps from barrier 6 of 6.

With an ideal run in transit, plenty of upside and a stack of raw ability and class, Funstar can make it five wins from six starts and claim her first victory at elite level.
