A weight-for-age race that is held at Royal Randwick, the George Main Stakes is held in September each year during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival.

It is run over 1600m and open to horses that are aged three and older.

Worth $500,000 in prizemoney, there is an added incentive with the winner of the George Main Stakes being exempt from the ballot of the $1 million Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) held at Royal Randwick two weeks later during ‘Super Saturday’ which also boasts the running of the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) for the stayers.

Named after George Main, the former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, the race always attracts a high-class field as they attempt to land a big early-season prize ahead of bigger targets in Sydney and Melbourne during the spring.

First run in 1945 when won by Modulation, the George Main Stakes has been won by some real stars of Australian racing with Kingston Town the most notable having recorded back-to-back victories in 1981 and 1982 during his illustrious career. Shannon (1946-47), Count Radiant (1964-65) and Regal Rhythm (1967-68) are others to triumph in successive years in the race.

Other notable winners include Baguette (1971), champion racehorse Emancipation (1983), popular front-runner Vo Rogue (1989), Shogun Lodge (1999), Defier (2002), the outstanding galloper Lonhro (2003), seven-time Group 1 winner Grand Armee (2004), More Joyous (2010) and Sacred Falls (2014).

The traditional lead up to the George Main Stakes includes running in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m), a route Sincero took in 2011 when winning both, two weeks earlier at Royal Randwick.

Alternatively, runners can compete in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m); both are held at Randwick four weeks and two weeks prior respectively.

The last winner of the race, Kermadec, followed that path as he entered the George Main Stakes third-up from a spell.

George Main Stakes Day features three Group 2 races including The Shorts for sprinters over 1100m, the Hill Stakes for stayers over 2000m and the Tea Rose Stakes for three-year-old fillies over 1400m. There is also the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m).

The George Main Stakes was not staged in 2007 due to an outbreak of Equine Influenza.
