George Main Stakes runners - Top 5 contenders for the Randwick Group 1

  • Who are the leading contenders for the George Main Stakes at Randwick on September 19?
Kermadec should be cherry ripe to take out the George Main Stakes

The George Main Stakes (1600m) will be the highlight at Randwick this weekend and the time-honoured Group 1 race has attracted some quality gallopers.

Money back at Ladbrokes if your horse finishes 2nd, 3rd or 4th in the George Main Stakes.

Here are the leading contenders:

Kermadec ($3.00 Ladbrokes)

The four-year-old gets his chance to break through for another Group 1 win on Saturday and is set to start as favourite in the $500,000 race. The Doncaster (1600m) winner has never finished further back than two lengths in any of his runs and was luckless at his last outing when finishing 2nd to the comeback horse, Complacent, in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m). The Chris Waller-trained galloper is third up on Saturday and should be cherry ripe this time around to go one better.

Royal Descent ($4.60 Luxbet)

The consistent mare, Royal Descent, is always thereabouts and should be prominent once again on the weekend. Another from the Waller stable, Royal Descent resumed with a brilliant win in the Warwick Stakes (1400m) before appearing to be a tad flat when finishing 3rd to Complacent last time in. She finished 2nd in this race when third up last year and she should be right in the finish.

Lucia Valentina ($6.50 William Hill)

The Kris Lees-trained Lucia Valentina comes into this after one run back from a spell, an eye-catching 6th behind Hooked in the Tramway Stakes (1400m). The former Kiwi galloper should be suited by the step up in trip but may need one more run before she really begins to hit her peak. The classy mare took out the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) in Melbourne last year before going on to grab 3rd in the Caulfield Cup (2400m). Look for her to be doing her best work late.

Pornichet ($6.50 Ladbrokes)

Pornichet is another galloper to come out of the Warwick Stakes as well as the Chelmsford and if he brings his A-game he can give this a big shake. After running 2nd in the Warwick Stakes, Pornichet started as favourite in the Chelmsford but dropped out of it to finish 6th after doing all the chasing earlier on. The former import may be another who is suited third up and at a similar stage of his last preparation he took out the Group 3 Neville Selwood (2000m) in fine fashion. The talented performer will have his share of admirers and is solid each-way value.

Hooked ($12 Betstar)

The underrated Hooked put in one of his best performances to date, claiming the Tramway Stakes ahead of Ecuador and Rudy last time in but may find this tough against some of the bigger names. The five-year-old goes well at the Randwick 1600m, having finished 3rd in last years Epsom but may be better suited under the Handicap conditions of that race. Last campaign he finished 7th in the George Ryder (1600m) when second up but his first up run was encouraging. Another who will start at each-way odds.
