George Main Stakes Tips - Who does history point towards winning the George Main Stakes at Randwick?

  • No problems for the 'odds-on' pops over the years
  • Waller has won three of the past four George Main Stakes
  • Hauraki well placed to run the Exacta
Kermadec is a previous winner of the George Main Stakes

The George Main Stakes (1600m) is a major lead up to the Epsom Handicap (1600m) and is a brilliant race in its own right, always won by high-class performers.

The Randwick weight-for-age is worth $500,000 and has been won by guns such as Defier (2002), Lonhro (2003), Grand Armee (2004) and More Joyous (2010). This year, the George Main, which will be raced as the 'Colgate Optic White Stakes', has attracted the glamour mare, Winx, who is at the prohibitive odds of $1.15 in early markets with sportsbet.

For fans of Winx, who are considering the odds, the race has featured a number of short priced winners and if we look through the results since the year 2000 it reveals the following trends.

Nine favourites have won the event since 2000 including three at odds on and they were More Joyous (2010), Racing To Win (2006) and Grand Armee (2004). Kermadec scored as a $2.35 chance last year, while Lonhro won at similar odds in 2003.

No horse has lost as an odds on favourite this millennium, although another mighty mare, Sunline, was rolled as a $1.60 chance by Shogun Lodge in 1999.

Only two horses have won above $10. Road To Rock caused a boilover in 2009, winning at $41 and Adam saluted at $13 in 2000. The average winning price since the year 2000 has been $6.80

Behind Winx in this year’s market with sportsbet is Hauraki at $10 and Tosen Stardom at $11. Le Romain at $14 is the only other horse under $20 at this stage.

This year, there are eight runners, which the same as the long term average number of runners in the race since 2000.

With the smallish fields in the George Main Stakes since 2000, barriers haven’t tended to be a factor in the event with winners coming from a variety of positions.

Horses to jump from Barrier 1, 4 or 5 have been the most successful with ten wins in total in that time period. No runner has won from Barrier 2 or 7 since before the year 2000.

This year, Le Romain has drawn 1,  It's Somewhat is in 4, while Hauraki is in 5. Great Esteem (2) and Tosen Stardom (7) will be looking to break the duck for horses drawn in those positions this century. Winx has drawn Barrier 6 and will be aiming to join Streama (2013) and Mentality (2008) as winners from that spot.

The most successful age group in the George Main Stakes since 2000 have been the five-year-olds with seven winners, including two of the last three in Sacred Falls (2014) and Streama. The five-year-olds in this year’s race are Hauraki and Winx.

Winx will be aiming to become third mare to win the race since 2010, with Streama and More Joyous (2010) the members of the fairer sex to salute in that time.

The most successful trainer’s in the race since 2000 have been Gai Waterhouse, John Hawkes and Chris Waller with three wins apiece. Waller has won three of the past four edition's of the race and saddles up Spiritjim, Vanbrugh and Winx.

Waterhouse and Hawkes are both without a runner this year. Waterhouse tasted success in the race with More Joyous, Mr Celebrity and Grand Armee, while Hawkes won the event in 2001 with Viscount and 2003 with Lonhro. He then teamed up with sons Michael and Wayne as the trio prepared Mentality to victory in 2008.

The most successful jockeys since 2000 are Corey Brown and Blake Shinn with two wins apiece. Neither of that pair are riding in the race on Saturday. Winx' jockey, Hugh Bowman, will be out to score his first win in the George Main.

Finally, there has been no obvious lead up race for the George Main. Four winners have come out of the Theo Marks Stakes, three have had their previous run in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), while two have come out of the Tramway Stakes (1400m).

This year, Winx took out the Warwick Stakes (1400m) in the lead up to this but was scratched from the Chelmsford, while Hauraki saluted in the Tramway.

Suggested bet according to history:

It all points to Winx, while Hauraki looks set to fill the exacta.

Winx $1.15 at sportsbet
Hauraki $1.26p at sportsbet
