Japanese duo confirmed for Caulfield and Melbourne Cups

Zac Purton riding Admire Rakti wins the Caulfield Cup

Classy Japanese stayers Chestnut Coat and Sole Impact have been entered for the Caulfield Cup (2400m) and Melbourne Cup (3200m).

The pair will be aiming to join the likes of Delta Blues (2006) and Admire Rakti (2014) as the only Japanese horses to have won the Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup respectively.

Chestnut Coat, a northern hemisphere four-year-old son of Heart’s Cry, has been in great form throughout 2018, racking up consecutive wins over 2200m and 2400m before finishing runner-up in the Group 3 Nikkei Sho (2500m) and then a 5th placing in the Group 1 Tenno Sho (3200m).

Sole Impact who is by super sire Deep Impact, hasn’t won since June 2017, but a recent 3rd placing in the Diamond Stakes (3400m) behind Fame Game is a good form reference.

Racing Victoria’s General Manager International and Racing Operations, Paul Bloodworth, is delighted that connections have signalled their intent to compete in Australia’s most prestigious and historic racing carnival.

“Chestnut Coat and Sole Impact are both quality horses and we identified them as potential Cups horses some time ago, so it’s very pleasing that their connections have already announced that they will be sending them to Melbourne for the Spring Racing Carnival,” Bloodworth said.
“With the likes of Magic Circle, Marmelo and Red Verdon also committed to travelling from the UK, and with record prizemoney on offer for the three major races, we’re set to celebrate 25 years of international competition in style. It’s an exciting time, and we’ll be announcing many more international runners over the coming weeks.”

Ryusei Sakai who is one of Japan’s leading apprentices and is currently riding in South Australia for Ryan Balfour, has been provisionally booked to ride Sole Impact in the Caulfield Cup on October 20.

“I was so excited and very surprised when I received the offer to ride Sole Impact in the Caulfield Cup, which will be my first start in a Group 1 race,” Sakai said.
“It will be a great experience for me to ride in such a time-honoured race, and I’m really grateful to all the connections for giving me this opportunity.”
