Kingston Town Classic Tips - Perth’s top Man to strike back at Ascot

  • Who will win the Ascot Group feature?

Despite having his colours lowered last start, the Justin Warwick-trained Material Man can bounce back in Saturday’s Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot.

Trainers Grant and Alana Williams saddle up the top pair in betting, Arcadia Queen ($2.50) and Galaxy Star ($5.50), and although both were impressive last start winners of the WA Guineas (1600m) and Railway Stakes (1600m) respectively, I think there is an argument to be made for Material Man at the juicy odds of $8.

Firstly, the Railway Stakes was run in 1:34.08 and the Guineas was run in 1:34.95 – nearly six lengths slower.

Galaxy Star ran her final 600m in a slick 33:88 while carrying 53kg and Arcadia Queen clocked 35:01 for her final 600m while carrying 54.5kg.

Galaxy Star goes up 4kg on Saturday and Arcadia Queen drops 4.5kg, so is the 8.5kg turnaround on weights enough to bridge the six-length margin on race time and seven-length deficit on the final 600m?

Over 1800m, each kilogram is worth approximately one length, and if Galaxy Star runs four lengths below last start and Arcadia Queen runs 4.5 lengths above last start, there will be little splitting them, but Arcadia Queen still rates 1.5 to two lengths above.

But back to Material Man, who I think has plenty of things in his favour.

Material Man went into the Railway Stakes first-up from a spell and ran 35:29.

However, he sat behind a hot speed with last year’s Railway winner Great Shot as that pair trailed Wrinkly.

And considering Wrinkly and Great Shot had fitness on their side and dropped out to near last and ran 36:38 and 36:91 respectively, Material Man’s effort to keep battling away for 3rd place was outstanding.

He meets Galaxy Star 2kg better at the weights for finishing 1.7 lengths behind her, while he also meets 2nd placed Gatting 3kg better at the weights.

Material Man should have far more upside than that pair, and he’ll get all the favours from barrier 2 with Trap For Fools likely to come across and give him a bunny to chase.

Material Man boasts three wins from four second-up attempts and he was narrowly beaten by Pounamu in this race last year when he was coming off a 5th placing in the Railway Stakes where he carried 53kg.

He carried 4kg more in this year’s Railway and they ran 11 lengths quicker than the previous year, so it’s fair to argue he’s going better this campaign.

If jockey Lucy Warwick can follow Trap For Fools or drop on pair further back if the early tempo is too hot, Material Man can finish best to score from the Williams-trained pair and Trap For Fools.
