Mackinnon Stakes Final Field and Barrier Draw - Blair House draws an inside gate for the Blue Army

  • A field of 10 runners will contest the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m)
  • Blair House looks hard to beat
Blair House (L) goes toe-to-toe with Bentbatl (R)

A field of 10 runners will contest Saturday’s Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington. The Charlie Appleby-trained Blair House heads the betting and has drawn barrier two.

It’s been a whirlwind week for Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby, who won the Melbourne Cup with Cross Counter on Tuesday. He looks likely to claim another Spring feature, with Blair House who looks like the class runner of the field.

The six-year-old gelding contested the Underwood Stakes (1800m) first-up and began poorly, ending his chances at victory. Things went to plan second-up in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) and he went to the line with Benbatl, beating Humidor home by three lengths. Those two runners ran second and third behind Winx in the Cox Plate only a fortnight ago.

The Joseph O’Brien-trained Latrobe came to Australia for the Melbourne Cup but the decision was made to hold him back for the Mackinnon Stakes. The four-year-old has terrific international form, defeating Rostropovich and Saxon Warrior in the Group 1 Irish Derby (2414m) in June. He draws barrier three and Mark Zahra takes the ride.

The Group 1 Empire Rose (1600m) winner Shillelagh is on the quick back-up and looks to have drawn perfectly in barrier six for James McDonald. JMac gave the seven-year-old daughter of Savabeel a peach of a ride and will be looking for the same result again, seven days later.

Two horses from the Victoria Derby will back-up a week later in the Mackinnon. The winner Extra Brut, trained by Darren Weir and to ridden by Craig Williams. He has drawn barrier nine while the Lindsay Park galloper Mickey Blue Eyes has Corey Brown on board and will jump from barrier four.
