Mackinnon Stakes Tips - Kiwi mare the one to beat

Jockey Opie Bosson rides Melody Belle to victory in the Tab Empire Rose Stakes during Derby Day at Flemington (PA Images)

There was some doubt around star New Zealand mare Melody Belle when she lined up in the Empire Rose Stakes (1600m), but after blowing her opposition away there, she looks even harder to beat at Flemington this Saturday.

The daughter of daughter of Commands was coming off a win in the Group 1 Livamol Classic (2040m) at Hastings, and the main query was her being as effective as she dropped back in trip to the mile.

She came from well off the pace and ran 35.28 for her final 200m which was slightly quicker than Fifty Stars went (35.36) for the same sectional in the Kennedy Cantala.

The Empire Rose was runner quicker early, so that gives more credit to Melody Belle’s superior sectional, while Fifty Stars also goes up 2kg on Saturday while the mare stays at the same weight.

A few others come out of the Cantala which rated high, but each also goes up on weight and I can’t see them beating Melody Belle on those figures.

Her final 200m in the Empire Rose wasn’t so impressive, but that’s due to her making such a long, sustained run in her first race for a month which dampened her finish over the final furlong.

The quick back-up is a concern on Saturday as she’s never backed up so quickly, but there’s no doubt this $2 million event over her pet trip was the main aim all along, so I’m willing to trust trainer Jamie Richards has her exactly where he wants her.

Magic Wand is the interesting runner dropping back in trip after finishing 10th in the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, and she may take some catching from out in front.
