Defending champion Cross Counter is one of 11 internationals in the final field for the 2019 Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

The last two editions of the Race That Stops A Nation have been won by international gallopers and the visiting party hold a strong hand once again of lifting the Cup.

The Charlie Appleby-trained Cross Counter, the topweight, has a favoured draw in barrier five.

Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) winner Mer De Glace, representing Japan and trainer Hisashi Shimizu, is the new favourite after coming up with barrier two.

Irish trainer Joseph O'Brien, who won the Cup two years ago with Rekindling, has four runners including Downdraft (barrier 15) who secured his spot with a Hotham Stakes victory at Flemington on Saturday.

His other contenders will be Master Of Reality, who jumps from barrier 1, Latrobe (barrier 22) and Twilight Payment (barrier 19).

Joseph's father Aidan will run Hunting Horn (barrier 11), Magic Wand, who got the car park draw in gate 24, and Il Paradiso (barrier 17).

Other international runners include Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) winner Prince Of Arran, who will jump from barrier 8 as he bids to go better than last year's third in the race for Charlie Fellows, and the Richard Hannon-trained Raymond Tusk (barrier 3).

Training partners David Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig hold weight of numbers for the Australian brigade with three runners - Constantinople, who has been replaced as favourite despite drawing barrier seven, Rostropovich (gate 12) and Neufbosc (gate 23).

Champion trainer Chris Waller has secured Cup berths for Finche, who drew well in gate four, and Youngstar (barrier nine).

Caulfield Cup runner-up Vow And Declare is regarded as a strong chance for Danny O'Brien but will jump wide having come up with barrier 21.

The remainder of the field is made up of Mirage Dancer (barrier 13), trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace's Southern France (barrier 14), Mustajeer (barrier 6) for Kris Lees, Michael Moroney's Sound (barrier 10), the Paul Preusker-trained Surprise Baby (barrier 20), Steel Prince (barrier 16) for Anthony Freedman and The Chosen One, who has barrier 18 for Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.
