Rekindling and Johannes Vermeer in the 2017 Melbourne Cup

Japanese raider Chestnut Coat heads the betting markets for the 2018 Melbourne Cup after committing to run in the Race That Stops A Nation.

Bookmaker Ladbrokes have put Chestnut Coat, a four-year-old son of Heart’s Cry, at the top of their Melbourne Cup futures at $14 after Racing Victoria revealed the Yoshito Yahagi-trained galloper was set to head Down Under along with the Hirofumi Toda-trained Sole Impact, a $41 chance.

CrownBet, meanwhile, make one of last year's fancied runners Marmelo, who was sent off favourite for the 2017 race only to finish ninth, as their top pick for the 2018 Melbourne Cup at $15 with Chestnut Coat on the second line of betting at $17.

Johannes Vermeer, who was second in the Melbourne Cup last year to Rekindling, is $21 to go one place better this year with CrownBet but Ladbrokes have him out at $34 for a repeat effort at Flemington.

Despite owner Lloyd Williams hinting that Rekindling, who became the youngest winner of the race for 76 years, will not be defending his title this year, both bookmakers have made the 2017 hero a $26 chance.

Other names to feature prominently in the betting at CrownBet include Withhold ($21), Ace High ($21), Kings Will Dream ($21), Magic Circle ($21), while Ascot Gold Cup winner Stradivarius is at $26.
