Moir Stakes Tips - Nature has too much speed

  • Who will win the big Moonee Valley sprint?

What a cracking test of speed Friday night’s Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) will be.

There are half a dozen front-runners in this event that would usually lead any field on their ear, but who will win the early speed battle with so much early pace?

Nature Strip is the obvious top pick considering he set a new 1000m record at Moonee Valley last start, but drawing barrier 7 on the outside of Houtzen (2), Jungle Edge (3), Ball Of Muscle (4) and Faatinah (6) is a concern.

However, Jungle Edge is speedy, but I doubt he’s speedy enough to lead these over 1000m.

Houtzen couldn’t match the early speed of Nature Strip last start, and after 100 meters, he was already two lengths in front of her, so I can’t see her holding him out this time.

Faatinah’s sectionals at Moonee Valley last start were 12.98, 10.24, 10.97, 11.40 and 12.07 compared to Nature Strip who clocked 12.85, 10.19, 10.82, 11.42 and 11.67.

Nature Strip was approximately 1.2 lengths quicker in the first 400m of the race, and this is where the tactical battle comes into play – does Nature Strip push past Faatinah or take a sit behind him.

Ball Of Muscle has the speed to lead them and I’m anticipating him to lead with either Nature Strip on his outside or one pair back following Faatinah.

Nature Strip tired in the final 100m last start which allowed Houtzen to get near him, and with five weeks between runs I think he was entitled to.

He should be at his absolute peak on Friday night, and It wouldn’t surprise if he breaks the track record again.

Darren Weir has said he’s the fastest horse he’s ever trained and that’s a big call.

Trainer Henry Dwyer has said Snitty Kitty will also go forward, but she’ll have to use too much petrol to cross these, and I doubt she even can – she’s likely to get posted three deep and that may hinder a few that are trying to run on late as they get caught behind or have to peel four wide on the bend.

If Nature Strip can improve on last start – and I think he can – nothing will be able to come from behind him.

Stablemate Voodoo Lad can’t be discounted as he tries to swoop from the rear, but I’m just worried about the traffic he’ll face.
