Our Victorian form expert highlights the horses to follow from each race.

Race 1 – O’Connor Beef 3YO BM70 Handicap (1000m) 58.26
BEL SONIC has always shown good ability and simply proved too good for them as he cruised along the inside to take the lead and pull away. He went quicker than the BM78 horses in Race 4, so he should have no trouble stepping up in grade next time to keep his weight down.

Race 2 – Momentum Gaming F&M BM78 Handicap (1400m) 1:25.99
The 5kg weight advantage for Evil Lil proved too much for Bonus D’oro as the pair went locked to the line, but the real eye-catcher was SOHO RUBY. She was third last on the bend but go dragged back to last with nowhere to go and had to switch around heels before winding up when it was all over to finish two lengths from the winner. That was her second-up run so she’ll still have room for improvement and can pick one up next time in a suitable event.

Race 3 – Hanson BM78 Handicap (2000m) 2:07.89
The result looked pace related with the placegetters settling together just behind the speed before winding up at the right time as the leaders faded and the rest were unable to make significant ground. Not keen to follow anything from this race.

Race 4 – John Duff & Co BM78 Handicap (1000m) 58.77
Another pace related result but this time it was the first three that kicked for home that held on to fill the placings while nothing really made ground. They went slower than the 3YOs early which favoured those on pace so put a line through the form.

Race 5 – Stabil-Lime Group Handicap (1200m) 1:12.26
Surely Jungle Edge goes for a spell this time. He was brave in defeat giving so much weight to the winner and runner-up who were also rock-hard-fit and enjoyed perfect trails into the race. Things went to plan for the first two home and no hard luck stories to come out of it so again, nothing for the black book.

Race 6 – Schweppes David Bourke Memorial Handicap (1600m) 1:38.64
Our Bottino and MASTER RESET set the pace up front but as the leader tired in the straight, Master Reset kicked strongly to score an impressive 3.25-length win. That was his fourth run this campaign, but following a four-week freshen-up, he should be able to hold that form or even improve on it. Stick with him next time.

Race 7 – Sportsbet Pakenham Cup (2500m) 2:39.54
Nothing really stood out in the feature but I’m happy to stick with DE LITTLE ENGINE. He’s only little and didn’t carry the big weight, while he usually peaks fourth to fifth-up so stick with him for his next couple – as long as he isn’t burdened with 60kg or more.

Race 8 – Racing.com VOBIS Gold Bullion (1400m) 1:25.44
The winner Amadeus scored impressively but he had fitness on his side as most of the competitors did. However, 2nd placed WILLI WILLI was only first-up from a spell and did a massive job to figure in the finish after being so far back and under pressure before the straight. He’ll only improve if previous campaigns are anything to go by.

Race 9 – Sportsbet Power Play BM70 Handicap (1600m) 1:39.47
It was a big effort for HUNAMOSA to hold on to 2nd place while carrying a good whack more weight than the winner and 3rd placegetter. Fourth-up with four weeks between runs as he stepped up to the mile was just too much with the big weight but he still has upside and can score next time.
