Perth Cup Tips - Mare represents great place value

Admittedly, my selection for Saturday’s Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) doesn’t scream winner, but she is consistent and represents great value for the Place.

The Justin Warwick-trained Elegant Blast has won just four times from 33 attempts, but she has managed to fill the placings on a further 17 occassions.

And more recently, she has missed the placings just once in her past 14 starts and that includes placings behind highly rated locals such as State Prosecutor, Western Temple, Come Play With Me, Pushin’ Shapes and Mississippi Delta.

The Grant and Alana Williams pair, Action ($3) and Mississippi Delta ($5.50), are the top two in betting following their 2nd and 1st placings in the ATA Stakes (2200m), and Elegant Blast has nice form behind Mississippi Delta.

The daughter of Blackfriars finished four lengths from Mississippi Delta in the Tattersall’s Cup (2100m), but that was when stepping up from 1800m, and she didn’t seem to finish it off.

Last start in the GA Townton Cup (2200m), Elegant Blast got well back in the run and worked home strongly along the rail and was taking late ground off Cappo D’oro and Mississippi Delta.

She didn’t have a lot of room in the final 200m and did a great job to finish so close as she clocked the quickest final 600m of the race (35:18).

The way she finished off suggests she’s looking for 2400m, and jockey Lucy Warwick knows her very well having been aboard for most of her career.

The Williams pair do look hardest to beat, but if you go on Elegant Blast’s last run, she impressed more than Mississippi Delta and she’s paying almost as much for the Place as that mare is for the win.
