  • Barrier 12 for Press Statement may not be so bad.

The son of Hinchinbrook resumed this campaign with a comfortable 2.3-length victory in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and surprised jockey Hugh Bowman who declared his mount had a lot of improvement to come.

Although Press Statement and Bowman combined for an all-the-way win in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) when jumping from barrier 14, that was his Grand Final last campaign and another daring front-running ride looks unlikely at this stage of his campaign.

The pair will need some luck this time around from the wide gate however, connections can draw confidence from the fact two of the past four Randwick Guineas winners (Mosheen 2012 and Dissident 2014) have jumped from barrier 12.

John O’Shea is the only trainer with multiple runners in this year’s renewal of the Randwick Guineas and will rely on Etymology (barrier 9) and Shards (barrier 2) to fly the Godolphin stable flag.

Both horses finished more than 5 lengths from Press Statement in the Hobartville Stakes and would need to really lift to have any chance of turning the tables.

The Kris Lees-trained Le Romain finished runner-up to Press Statement last start and has also drawn awkwardly in barrier 8, and considering he had fitness on his side last time, it’s hard to see him pushing Press Statement any harder.

Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) winner Stay With Me is the only filly to accept for the race and is on the quick back-up after finishing 3rd Ghisoni in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) last Saturday.
