Randwick Guineas Runners - Top 5 contenders for the first leg of the Sydney Triple Crown

  • Who are the leading contenders for the Randwick Guineas?
Press Statement will be going for his third Group 1 win over 1600m

The Randwick Guineas (1600m) is the highlight of what should be a big day of racing at Randwick this weekend and the $1 million race for the three-year-olds looks set to attract a cracking field of youngsters.

Here are the top 5 contenders in early markets.

Press Statement ($1.50 Ladbrokes)

The Caulfield Guineas (1600m) winner shapes as the testing material and heads into this with one run under his belt this campaign for an emphatic win in the Hobartville Stakes (1400m). Chris Waller's young gun was sent out an even money favourite in that lead up and cruised to a comfortable two length win ahead of Le Romain and Montaigne. Press Statement has had eight career starts for six wins, including two at Group 1 level, both of which came over 1600m. The odds-on favourite should only get better second up and will be tough to beat.

Stay With Me ($7.50 Sportsbet)

The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained filly has been luckless at her two starts this campaign. After a successful spring carnival in Melbourne that saw her claim the Thousand Guineas (1600m), Stay With Me stepped out in the Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) last month but was caught deep and overraced, when finishing 5th of 7 behind Perignon. Last weekend she ran into Ghisoni and finished 3rd behind that galloper after once again travelling wide. The well-bred galloper can improve further on that run and if the Victorian training duo decide to back her up this weekend she can present a danger to Press Statement.

Montaigne ($10 CrownBet)

The Anthony Cummings-trained Montaigne has raced just four times in his career for two wins and was an impressive 3rd behind Press Statement when jumping up in class in the Hobartville. The son of Road To Rock settled towards the rear on that occasion and rattled home in the closing stages to finish just under four lengths away from the winner. Whilst it is hard to see him making up the necessary ground to get past Press Statement, he looks to have plenty of upside and he looms as a solid place contender.

Risque ($12 CrownBet)

Another for the Hayes/Dabernig team is the former Kiwi, Risque, who made her Australian racing debut in impressive style three weeks ago, taking out the Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m). The stable acquisition is highly rated by her new trainers ran some fast times back in her homeland on the way to winning three of her six starts including a Group 1 win in the NZ 1000 Guineas. The daughter of Darci Brahma represents some X-factor in the race and could be the value at the each-way quote.

Dal Cielo ($21 CrownBet)

The Kiwi galloper has put in some big efforts in the past but has been unable to break through for a win in this country after claiming success in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) in his homeland a year ago. The Murray Baker-trained colt was close up in both the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) and the Sandwon Guineas (1600m) but has been outclassed by Press Statement on the two occasions they have met. The $21 chance can be an improver at his second run form a spell and is one for the trifectas.
