Randwick Guineas Tips - forgotten Group 1 winner ready to fly again

Tim Clark on Trapeze Artist

While the focus remains solidly on Kementari ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m), I’m anticipating the forgotten horse to spring into action.

Gerald Ryan’s Trapeze Artist couldn’t match motors with Kementari as the pair duelled down the Rosehill Gardens straight in the Hobarville Stakes (1400m) last start, but that doesn’t mean a great deal based on previous performances.

Trapeze Artist appears to be a reliable peak pattern horse and he quite simply goes to another level when third-up.

He won on debut over 1250m but then struggled to finish off when second-up over 1200m and faded into 4th place.

He then blew them away with a three-length victory in the Black Opal Stakes (1200m) before disappointing in the Golden Slipper (1200m) but then finishing 3rd in the Inglis Sires’ (1400m) on a Heavy track.

Last campaign, he finished roughly three lengths off the pace in both the Up and Coming (1300m) and Stan Fox Stakes (1500m), but then demolished the Group 1 Golden Rose field when scoring by 4.5 lengths.

So far, in two campaigns, the son of Snitzel has not only peaked at his third-up run, he has absolutely smashed his previous benchmark.

First-up this campaign Trapeze Artist announced he was back in good order when taking out the Expressway Stakes (1200m), but he then battled away to finish 4th behind Kementari in the Hobartville Stakes (1400m).

Although Kementari, Pierata and D’argento outgunned Trapeze Artist late, I love the way he kept going after the line and was well clear of the pack 200m after the finish line.

That’s a good sign heading into a 1600m event, and if the can peak third-up again, he might just blow them away.

The fact he ran 1400m out strongly on a Heavy 8 gives me confidence he’ll have no problem running the mile right out on a Good-rated surface.

Originally, I was leaning to D’argento in this event, and I think he’ll be running on strongly at the finish, but I just can’t ignore the third-up peak pattern of Trapeze Artist.
