A few things fall into the favour of smart mare Single Gaze as she attempts to break through at Rosehill Gardens in Saturday’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

The Nick Olive-trained daughter of Not A Single Doubt was beaten home by Harlem, Gailo Chop and Ventura Storm in the Australian Cup (2000m) and that trio line up in opposition on Saturday.

However, Single Gaze really caught the eye working home from well back in the field, and she now has an advantage on that trio – plenty of experience at the track.

Not only has Single Gaze raced at Rosehill on six occasions, but she’s a Group 1 winner at the track and trip haven taken out the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) as a three-year-old.

She did it in a time of 2:03.03 and that time is on par with previous Ranvet winners The United States (2016 - 2:03.1) and Contributer (2015 - 2:03.1).

She also finished 3rd to Assign and Astronomos in the Neville Selwood Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on a Heavy track so the likelihood of a wet track shouldn’t pose a problem.

Harlem, Gailo Chop and Ventura Storm are yet to race at Rosehill Gardens, and that could be enough to give the consistent mare the edge she needs to break through for the first time this campaign.

Unfortunately, she seems to have lost some of her early speed, and regular rider Kathy O’Hara has been hard at her to hold a forward position for the first few hundred metres.

She ran bravely finishing runner-up in the CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and Peter Young Stakes (1800m) when bustled for the first 400m, but O’Hara relaxed a bit on her last start and that saw her get back further than usual.

As a result, she covered a stack of ground on the turn but was still able to run the second quickest 200m split from the 600m to the 400m (11.17), equal quickest split from the 400m to the 200m (11.23) and the equal second quickest final split (11.74).

With those three runs under her belt, O’Hara can afford to drive her hard and hold a forward position from the inside gate, and while the Soft track puts a few to disadvantage, Single Gaze can keep plugging home to hopefully cause an upset.
