Auvray represents value in the Sydney Cup

It is Day Two of The Championships at Randwick on Saturday April 14 and with plenty of upsets on the opening day we have trawled through the form to pick out the best three roughies to back, each-way.

Here are three from the Group 1 races on offer.

Race 6 - 2:25PM JAMES BOAG'S PREMIUM AUSTRALIAN OAKS (2400 METRES)

The three-year-old fillies battle it out in the first of the Group 1 races, the Australian Oaks and one that may have snuck under the radar a bit is the Tony McEvoy-trained Bring Me Roses. The daughter of High Chaparral finished down the track after overracing in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) but if she can settle better this time around she should be an improver. It is interesting to note that she put on a similar display in the Wakeful Stakes (2000m) in the spring before running a strong 2nd behind Pinot in the VRC Oaks (2500m). A proven contender over the distance, Bring Me Roses is one that is rarely far away and has performed well in strong class throughout her career. The stable head into this with confidence and if Luke Currie can slot in with cover from the tricky barrier, she could be the one at a nice price.

Race 8 - 3:45PM SCHWEPPES SYDNEY CUP (3200 METRES)

The Sydney Cup shapes as an intriguing race with the stayers lining up over the two miles and it is Auvray that heads in as a solid each-way contender. The Richard Freedman-trained galloper settled towards the rear in a strangely run race in the Tancred Stakes (2400m) and did very well in the closing stages to grab 6th, beaten three lengths by Alamdin. He meets that horse 5kg better off at the weights and the 3rd placegetter, Who Shot Thebarman 3kg better. He has solid form at the distance range when racing overseas earlier in his career and had excuses when dropping out of it in the 2016 edition of this race. He should save every inch of ground from barrier 1 and a top three finish is on the cards for the seven-year-old.

Race 9 - 4:25PM COOLMORE LEGACY STAKES (1600 METRES)

The final Group 1 of the day is the Coolmore Legacy Stakes (1600m) and it is an open affair for the fillies and mares. The Victorian galloper, Abbey Marie, has been posted as a $26 chance in early markets and can go close over the 1600m. She ran 2nd in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) in the spring before heading to the Caulfield Cup (2400m) a race in which she finished a competitive 6th. She has had two starts this preparation for a close up 6th in the Orr Stakes (1400m) before being unsuited by the muddling tempo in the Peter Young Stakes (1800m), which was taken out by Gailo Chop. It is interesting that the stable has decided to drop her back in distance and she can measure up to these.
