Roughies Tips - 3 roughies to back at Flemington on ANZAC Day

Can the old timer, Jacquinot Bay, notch up another win?

ANZAC Day racing is at Flemington for an eight race programme that includes the VRC St Leger (2800m).

We have looked through the fields and picked out the best three roughies to back for the day, each-way

Race 2 - 1:35PM Battle of Villers-Bretonneux Handicap (1800 METRES)

The old timer, Jacquinot Bay, is back for another crack and this time he lines up in Race 3 of the day at Flemington over the 1800m trip. The 10-year-old drops down in class after taking on races such as the Easter Cup (2000m) and the Peter Young Stakes (1800m) in recent times and should find this one a lot easier. The last time he raced at Flemington was back on January 13 and on that occasion, he was a dominant three-length winner ahead of The Chairman. While he is approaching retirement, he is certainly not the worst in this and as is his style he will push forward from the barrier. With a number of his rivals likely to get back, he looks to be right in this one.

Race 4 - 2:45PM Battle of Coral-Balmoral Handicap (1620 METRES)

Race 4 is for the fillies and mares and it looks to be a wide-open race with Soho Ruby heading the market at $5.50. At the $14 quote is the Colin Little-trained Domino Vitale and the six-year-old is one that can threaten some of the favoured runners if the breaks go her way. The daughter of Casino Prince generally likes to settle towards the rear in her races and comes off an 8th placing behind Miss Gunpowder in the Bendigo Gold Bracelet (1400m) when unsuited by the lack of pace up front. Prior to that she ran a handy 5th in this class off a tough run behind the flying Kings Will Dream at Flemington over this distance on February 17. She is likely to get back again on Wednesday but with the big field and plenty of pace inside her, she may have conditions to suit. She has generally performed well at this track in the past and it would be no surprise to see her finish in the first few.

Race 6 - 4:00PM VRC St Leger (2800 METRES)

The feature of the day is the St Leger for the three-year-old stayers over the 2800m journey and it is the Godolpin galloper, Astoria, that will be lining up at a short price. He comes off a 2nd to Levendi in the Tulloch Stakes (2000m) and an inconclusive run in the AJC Derby (2400m) after being checked out of it. For those that are keen to take on the hotpot, it may be worth considering Won Won Too, who will be out to make it two wins in a row after taking out the Galilee Series Final (2400) on April 14. The David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained galloper seemed to relish the step up to the 2400m that day, jumping up from finishing 9th over the 2000m journey to score against a similar lot that he meets here on Anzac Day. In a race with a few unknowns, the improving type may just be the one that handles an extra 400m and he was very strong to the line last time. The $14 on offer represents value.
