Saturday Scope - Group One Racing previewed for Makybe Diva Stakes Day

  • We preview the major Spring Players from Makybe Diva Stakes Day
  • What are the best long range bets?
Hartnell wins the P.B. Lawrence Stakes

It’s an action packed weekend of racing with Group One action from Flemington. Hartnell heads the betting for the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes and Catchy is favourite in an open Danehill Stakes.

We preview racing from Headquarters and dissect the major Spring players.

Race 2: Pin & Win Plate (Listed)
ROYAL SYMPHONY: All eyes will be on the unbeaten three-year-old Doomsday Colt Royal Symphony as he steps out and attempts to make it four wins from as many races. He looks like a future Group One winner and is the $5.00 favourite for the Caulfield Guineas and is also nominated for the Caulfield Classic and Cox Plate. MURAAHIB was something beaten in the Group Three H.D.F. McNeil Stakes behind Merchant Navy and Booker at a double-figure price and is a deserved second favourite on that performance. This will be a great guide leading into the Caulfield Guineas and beyond.

Race 4: Group Two Bobbie Lewis Quality
Interesting race with many horses first-up. These include Newmarket Handicap winner REDKIRK WARRIOR. He holds favouritism ahead of the Darren Weir-trained VOODOO LAD. Voodoo Lad got the right run but was still far too good for Sheidel and Co. SO SI BON stays at 1200m which is an interesting decision from Robbie Laing. Another Perth sprinter is coming East of the border, this time his name is SCALES OF JUSTICE. Scales Of Justice is the second highest rated horse in the race, The highest rated horse is LUCKY HUSSLER. A multiple Group One winner who had an extremely poor Autumn Campaign.

Race 5: Group Two Danehill Stakes
This is an extremely even bunch of three-year-olds. Blue Diamond winner CATCHY holds favouritism but the shine has gone off the Fastnet Rock Filly after her last two defeats. She looked all over a winner at the furlong first-up but couldn’t reach the fit, in-form Crown Witness. The Godolphin horse ESPERANCE has won his first two races by a combined 10 lengths despite being very raw. The unbeaten JUKEBOX came from a seemingly impossible position first-up and grabbed Plutocracy right on the post. BOOKER ran right up to her Jumpout form first-up and raced the unbeaten Merchant Navy right to the line. She is the second favourite behind Catchy for the Thousand Guineas and this race should be an extremely good guide. This race will shape both the Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas.

Race 7: Group One Makybe Diva Stakes
With the compressed weight scale, HARTNELL looks the clear one to beat in the Makybe Diva Stakes. His first-up win in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield was very impressive. We get back to Flemington and It seems even more unlikely that the likes of Black Heart Bart and Le Romain can challenge the Caulfield Cup favourite. After Bonneval scored a surprising and impressive first-up victory in the Dato Tan Chin Nam at Moonee Valley, now is the perfect time to get on Hartnell if you are keen for him to win the Caulfield Cup. Assuming he salutes in the Makybe Diva, his odds will once again shorten. The Jury was out on BLACK HEART BART after two below average runs, but back at Caulfield, his run behind Hartnell was very encouraging. The Darren Weir-trained HUMIDOR is tracking along very nicely, with HEY DOC and JON SNOW in the same boat.

Race 8: Listed Japan Racing Association Trophy
It’s now September and with under two months until the big dance, the Macedon Lodge team have six runners involved in this event over 2500m. These include the 2016 Melbourne Cup winner ALMANDIN who looks to have come back better than ever. Under 61kg, Almandin sat three-wide the trip over the 2040m at Moonee Valley and only just went down to the fit and in-form Pacodali. I haven’t seen enough from either Crocodile Rock or Hans Holbein to suggest they can be major players in the Spring. The Jury is out on BONDI BEACH. He needs to show something soon if Robert Hickmott is to head towards another Melbourne Cup with him. Both ALOFT and YOGI are very progressive types. I can’t see them reaching the top level over the Spring but they can be good money spinners at lower grades throughout the next three months.
