Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby has proved the man to beat in Australian Cups races whether it be the biggest dance of the all, the Melbourne Cup, or a country Cup in rural Victoria.

Appleby’s first Australian Cups appearance was in 2016 where Scottish finished runner-up to Jameka in the Caulfield Cup (2400m), and that was quickly followed by Qewy and Oceanographer finishing 1st and 3rd respectively in the Geelong Cup (2400m).

Since then, Appleby has tasted success with Francis Of Assisi (Bendigo Cup - 2400m), Qewy (Sandown Cup - 3200m), Polarisation (Sydney Cup - 3200m), Folkswood (Cranbourne Cup – 2025m), Qewy (Bendigo Cup 2400m) and Cross Counter in last year’s Melbourne Cup (3200m).

There is no doubting Appleby knows which horses to bring to Australia, and Dubhe might be one of his most exciting stayers to be sent here.

In his first appearance since the Melbourne Cup, Cross Counter outstayed his rivals to win the Dubai Gold Cup (3200m) at Meydan in a time of 3:19.00 with 55kg, which was 4kg more than he carried at Flemington.

At his most recent start, Dubhe won a 3200m race at Meydan in 3:20.88 and was quite soft to the line as he cruised to a four-length victory.

Dubhe faced the breeze outside the leader for the whole way while Cross Counter enjoyed a soft run behind the speed and peeled out at the right time to score.

Cross Counter was also given four runs around 2400m before stepping up to 3200m at just his eighth start, yet Dubhe was only given one 2400m run before tackling the two miles at his seventh start.

All the signs are there that Dubhe is an exceptional stayer who is on the up, and with three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy on board from barrier 4, Dubhe is clearly the one to beat.
