The Goodwood Tips - Spright the hardest to beat

  • Spright looks the hardest to beat in Saturday's Group One The Goodwood (1200m)

Spright is a warm favourite and looks very hard to beat in Saturday’s Group One The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville.

Looking at the speed map, there looks to be plenty of early speed on. Valour Road got an easy lead last start in the Euclase Stakes and won’t get that again, with the likes of Inn Keeper, Despatch and Cool Passion all rolling forward from inside barriers.

Jamaican Rain will likely be cast from barrier 11 with T.Harrison on board unless she rolls forward, as will Gytrash but they are likely to go back. I Am Someone, Casino Wizard and Hard Empire all look to land got positions midfield, with Iconoclasm likely to slot in with cover from his wide barrier.

Malibu Style maps worse than midfield, with Behemoth in an awful position worse than midfield, behind those are Steel Frost, Zalmona, Spright and Booker.

The Garry Frazer-trained Spright will be looking for consecutive Group One victories and this looks no harder than what she faced in the Robert Sangster (1200m) a fortnight ago.

She finally got her set-up there last start and she showed her terrific turn of foot to storm over the top of Cool Passion, running 12.5 lengths above benchmark for her final 600m for an overall figure of eight-lengths above benchmark. She gets barrier 16 with D.Oliver on board, both are positives as she maps to get wide and charge late again.

Behind Spright, it looks a very even contest. The Danny O’Brien-trained Iconoclasm was very tough at Caulfield first-up and kept kicking to defeat Miss Vixen. He sat three-wide with no cover and was under the whip at the 300m and was headed by Miss Vixen at the 100m but stuck his neck out and won.

He has a figure of 15.7 lengths above benchmark last preparation in the Group One Kennedy Mile and flogged a genuine G1 horse in Widgee Turf at The Valley. He is a genuine winning chance.

Booker got the perfect run first-up winning a very high-rating Oakleigh Plate (1100m) against Encryption and Eduardo. She ran an ok ninth in the Newmarket Handicap but she didn’t pull up great after that run.

She has had 67 days between runs, which is a positive as she is a better horse fresh. She has had two Flemington jumpouts, the last one was good as beat stablemate Smart Coupe under light riding. She will be back from barrier 15 with D.Dunn on.
I thought the horse who could run a race at big odds was Steel Frost. He had excuses but was still good to the line against I Am Someone in the Wangoom last start when beaten 2.4 lengths into fifth.

He should improve again third-up and was only beaten 2.3 lengths by Santa Ana Lane in this race last year and was 1.3 lengths off Widgee Turf in the same preparation. He probably not going as well this year but gets a good map and J.Kah sticks.
