Toorak Handicap Tips - Waller’s mare in the mix for Group 1

  • Who does the handicap favour?
Michael Dee rides Shillelagh to win the Kennedy Mile on Derby Day at Flemington

As usual, the Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) is a wide-open affair, and despite the handicap conditions favouring horses down in the weights, those with big weights have a great record in the race.

Tosen Stardom carried top weight of 57.5kg to win last year, and prior to that, Lucky Hussler (2015), Solzhenitsyn (2013), King Mufhasa (2011) and More Joyous (2010) carried 58kg to victory.

In 2018, the Godolphin pair, Hartnell and Jungle Cat, will have to carry 59kg and 58.5kg respectively, but is there something down in the weights that can knock the big boys off?

Land Of Plenty meets Jungle Cat better at the weights following a narrow 3rd placing behind that galloper in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) which is generally the best guide to the Toorak, but after drawing gate 19, Land Of Plenty has a task ahead of him.

Hartnell comes into Saturday’s assignment fresh off a narrow win in the Epsom Handicap (1600m) and it’s a mare that also comes through that race that I’m keen on.

The Chris Waller-trained Shillelagh absolutely motored home to be beaten 1.2 lengths by Hartnell and D’Argento who went to the line locked while Unforgotten was a length back in 3rd.

Shillelagh was still looking for clear running while Unforgotten was in full flight, yet she managed to take a stack of ground off Unforgotten who has been hailed as Winx’s successor.

Third-up last campaign, Shillelagh charged home from last to finish 2nd in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m), and third-up last spring, she came from just off the speed to win the Group 1 Cantala Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.

I think this mare has a real sense of timing about her being third-up, and she now meets Hartnell 1.5kg better at the weights.

If she can settle a bit closer to the speed like she did in the Cantala, her superior turn of foot can get her over the line first in what looks a cracking edition of the Toorak.
