Villiers Stakes Tips - Likely wet track suits Gaulois

  • Gaulois has two wins and three placings from five starts on rain-affected ground.
  • Peaked third-up last campaign and was game in defeat last start.
  • Maps to get a soft run behind genuine tempo.
Gaulois wins at Royal Randwick

Saturday’s Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) looks set to be run on a Soft track with up to 40mms of rain predicted at Randwick on Thursday and Friday.

The favourite, Sky Boy, has won his past four with three being on a Good track, and he’s yet to be tested at this level with a genuine rain-affected track.

In his most recent effort, he carried 58kg over 1800m at Rosehill and ran his last 600m in 0:35.10.

My main concern with Sky Boy is the fact he’s nearing the end of his preparation and could train off without a moments notice, and the drop back from 2000m to 1800m and now 1600m doesn’t look ideal

In comparison, the James Cummings-trained Gaulois carried 59kg at Rosehill over 1500m last start and failed to peg back Arraignment when that galloper was carrying 8.5kg less.

Gaulois ran his last 600m 0:34.01 which was quicker than My Nordic Hero (0:34.28), Goodfella (0:34.91) and Duca Valentinois (0:34.80) who competed in the Festival Stakes (1500m) two races earlier on the day.

Duca Valentinois drops 1.5kg while My Nordic Hero and Goodfella go up 1.5kg and 1kg respectively, while Gaulois drops a massive 6kg and looks weighted to win.

The overall time in the Festival Stakes was quicker than Gaulois’ race, but with more upside and a big weight drop, Gaulois can handle a hotter early speed and now and can finish stronger with a sharper turn of foot and light weight.

Gaulois went to Melbourne third-up last preparation and scored a half-length win over Masculino and Iconoclasm, and that form looks strong with Masculino winning his next two at Flemington and Caulfield while Iconoclasm had won three in a row prior to that run.

He's drawn perfectly in barrier 6, and with Fabrizio, Red Excitement and Sky Boy setting the speed up front, Gaulois can drop in behind and have the last crack them in the straight.

Gaulois has a win and two placings from three starts on a Heavy track and a further win and placing from two starts on a Soft track.

The rain could be the deciding factor, and I’m happy to be on Gaulois with a wet track.
