VRC Sprint Classic Final Field and Barrier Draw - Redzel draws barrier eight for sprint feature

  • Redzel draws barrier eight for the VRC Sprint Classic (1200m)
  • 14 elite sprinters will race down the Flemington straight
Redzel wins the 2017 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m).

The Everest winner Redzel has drawn perfectly in barrier eight for Saturday’s Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) formerly known as the Darley Classic at Flemington.

Superstar sprinter Redzel will be aiming to defend his title in another sprinting feature when he takes on 13 rivals at Flemington on Saturday. He has already defending his Everest crown and won this race last year, defeating Terravista and Impending.

After claiming the first ever Melbourne Cup for Godolphin on Tuesday, trainer Charlie Appleby will be attempting to continue his Group One success with Jungle Cat. The winner of the Sir Rupert Clarke (1400m) has been freshened-up since running down the track in the Toorak Handicap (1600m) and will jump from barrier two.

Aidan O’Brien will be well represented, with four runners. The pick of the quartet looks to be Spirit Of Valor, who has acquitted himself so well in Australia. He was three-wide the trip in the Manikato Stakes (1200m) and still went so close, beating all but Brave Smash. He will jump from barrier 12.

The two four-year-olds Kementari and Pierata will meet again after clashing in the Group 1 Missile Stakes (1200m) all the way back in August. Surprisingly, Kementari hasn’t won a race this Spring, despite going so close in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) and Manikato Stakes (1200m). The Lonhro colt will jump from barrier nine.

The Greg Hickman-trained Pierata announced himself as an elite sprinter last start, defeating Jungle Edge in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m), while running faster time than Redzel did winning The Everest. He has drawn barrier three.

The Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane will jump from barrier five, whilst the Kris Lees-trained runner In Her Time will appreciate getting back on top of the ground when she jumps from barrier seven on Saturday.
