VRC Sprint Classic Tips - Sprint king to retain his crown

Redzel (red) ridden by Kerrin McEvoy wins the Darley Classic

Two equal favourites at $5 tells you just how open Saturday’s Group 1 VRC Sprint Classic (1200m) is.

Redzel and Pierata are on the first line of betting while Kementari ($7) and Santa Ana Lane ($9.50) are the only other runners under double figures.

I have a lot of respect for Santa Ana Lane, but some of his worst runs have been at Flemington down the straight so I’m willing to risk him.

Likewise, Kementari didn’t put in down the straight when beaten 7.5 lengths in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), and although he was dropping back from 1600m and didn’t look suited, he dropped back to 1200m from 1600m last start when running a blinder in the Manikato Stakes.

Pierata ran quicker time (1:10.82) to win the Sydney Stakes (1200m) than Redzel did to win The Everest (1200m) in 1:12.03, and Pierata had the wood on Kementari when they met last despite Kementari having fitness on his side.

However, Pierata is yet to race down the straight at Flemington, and time and time again, some top sprinters have come unstuck without a corner to ping off of.

Redkirk Warrior is a two-time winner down the straight but there has to be a question mark on how he has come back following and unsuccessful two-run campaign in England.

Spright is a winner down the straight and was arguably just as impressive as Kementari in the Manikato Stakes (1200m) last start, but even when she motored home in the Crown Resorts Plate (1100m) at Flemington where she ran 33.61 for her final 600m, her sectionals don’t suggest she can run down Redzel who ran his last 600m in the Darley Classic last year in 34.03.

On that sectional alone, Spright ran 2.5 lengths quicker in the last 600m, but I think she’ll be spotting Redzel more than that and will struggle to bridge the gap.

Brave Smash went close to winning the Newmarket but was edged out by Redkirk Warrior, but I can’t get past the fact he’s been beaten by Redzel in their three encounters.

Redzel has been down the Flemington straight three times for two wins and a 2nd, and he can extend that record on Saturday.
