William Reid Stakes Tips - Sunlight to lead all the way

  • Outside gate may be a blessing for Sunlight.
  • Spright the value Place chance.
Sunlight winning the Newmarket Handicap

Sunlight is undoubtedly the best sprinting filly in the land, and she can claim her third Group 1 victory in four starts when she lines up in Friday night’s William Reid Stakes (1200m) at The Valley.

The Tony McEvoy-trained daughter of Zoustar has only missed the placings once in 14 starts, and that was when being severely held up in the Manikato Stakes when having her first race at The Valley.

She was a length slow to begin and got stuck behind Jungle Edge who was dropping back in her lap before picking up midrace in what was a real muddling tempo.

As Jungle Edge started to weaken on the bend, Sunlight had nowhere to go and got dragged back through the field and was never able to build momentum.

Well, drawing barrier 11 of 11 in her redemption mission may appear to be a disadvantage, but I think it gives her the best chance of winning.

Third-up last campaign, Sunlight drew gate 10 of 11 in the Thoroughbred Club Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield and worked to the front and led all the way to defeat Humma Humma who carried 3kg less.

Sunlight stacked them up in that run and went 6.5 lengths below the benchmark for her first 600m, but in the start prior she went 4.5 lengths above benchmark early so she’s a filly that can do it at both ends and be just as effective.

I think jockey Luke Currie will be looking to take luck out of the equation this time by going forward, and from the outside gate, she won’t have any runner getting in her way to slow her down.

Last start in the Newmarket Handicap, she went led that speed field comfortably going 1.6 lengths above benchmark for the first 600m, and she finished off strong going a length above benchmark for her final 600m.

She looks like she’s ready to peak on Friday night, and I simply can’t see anything coming from behind her to win.

Shoals is flying and put in a super first-up effort behind Trapeze Artist, and she maps to get a soft run one or two pairs back on the outside.

Spright came home three lengths quicker on the same day, and if she can follow Shoals in the run, I think she can overpower her late, however, I don’t think either of that pair will mow Sunlight down.

And while Sunlight rates on top, she’s paying $2.20 for the Win while Spright is paying $3.50 for the Place – both options are enticing.
