Winx Stakes Tips - Randwick specialist to win first up

Blake Shinn riding Happy Clapper winning the Star Doncaster Mile at Randwick

Aside from Invincible Gem and Le Romain who finished 2nd and 3rd behind Alizee when first-up from a spell, it’s a bit of a guessing game with the remainder of Saturday’s Winx Stakes (1400m) field as they have their first run for the spring.

Invincible Gem clearly had Le Romain’s measure last start, and I can’t see their order changing on Saturday so I’m willing to dismiss Le Romain.

I’m also looking past Chris Waller’s quartet, Kings Will Dream, Unforgotten, Youngstar and Verry Elleegant, because neither impressed at the barrier trials.

Kings Will Dream flashed home to be narrowly beaten by Humidor in the Memsie Stakes (1400m), and Verry Elleegant was a good thing beaten in the Vanity Stakes (1400m) at Flemington when first-up last campaign, but I just can’t have them off their recent trials.

I blackbooked Samadout from the barrier trials – and she beat Verry Elleegant home by 8.5 lengths in that trial – but she’ll find trying to lead all the way over 1400m much tougher in this grade.

Best Of Days was also 6.5 lengths from Samadoubt in that trial, and the overall time was slow (1:00.10) and I’m keen to risk each horse in it – especially Samadoubt who was pushed out and ran 34.80 for the final 600m.

Avilus looked impressive winning his trial on the same day but the time tells a different story as he ran 1:02.40 and closed off in around 36.20 for the final 200m.

He usually resumes over 1600m, and to be stepping out over 1400m in what is his toughest first-up test to date, I’m keen to take him on.

If you ignore Happy Clapper’s last spring campaign where he resumed in Melbourne and was beaten 2.2 lengths by Humidor in the Memsie Stakes, his first-up record is outstanding.

In the spring of 2017, he defeated Tom Melbourne and Invincible Gem in the Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick, and then the following autumn, he defeated Global Glamour and Invincible Gem in the Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick.

Last campaign he warmed up with two barrier trials at Randwick over 900m and 1000m before finishing 2nd to Winx in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

He comes into this campaign off 900m and 1000m trials, and while his last trial may not have looked super-impressive, and was downplayed by his trainer Pat Webster, I though the trial was full of merit and he looks ready to fire first-up over 1400m.

Happy Clapper loves Randwick, he’s got a great first-up record, his trial was arguably the strongest, and he’ll get every chance with Hugh Bowman aboard from barrier 5.
