NHL Tips

Edmonton Oilers @ Winnipeg Jets

After several decent hits, NHL hockey punters shouldn't be turning up their nose on underdog odds on the Edmonton Oilers as they prepare for a Thursday night game in the Canadian tundra against Winnipeg. The Oilers, winners of four straight, will take on the Winnipeg Jets. Edmonton enters the game at $2.55 with William Hill, pretty long odds on the moneyline for an NHL game.

The Oilers have blossomed under new head coach Ken Hitchcock. Of note, Edmonton's defensive systems appear to have improved drastically as Cam Talbot is once again looking like a bonified NHL starting goalie. For a large part of this season, he did not look that way. If back-up goalie Koskinen remains solid then Edmonton has a serious playoff-bound team and is a plausible Pacific Division regular-season title winner.

But in the game at hand, the Oilers should only be taken with a +1.5 handicap. The odds shorten down to $1.53 with Unibet on that line but some caution needs to be taken in this game. After all, the Oilers aren't the only hot team in the league. The Jets themselves are 7-3-0 in their last ten. Furthermore, from home they have been very good this season as they are 11-6 on the moneyline.

But an Oiler team with a handicap and odds that still count for something looks smart. Not only has the defense been good of late, but both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are alive and scoring regularly. The Oilers will be very difficult to defeat by 2 or more and +1.5 with Unibet looks like a strong move.

The Montreal Canadiens are a team to watch when it comes to NHL Ante Post. Through six games the Canadiens have earned an impressive nine points. While their schedule has been home-heavy, they have tallied three of a possible four points in their road games.

Montreal has what might end up being a deadly tandem in net. Carey Price requires no introduction as a former Vezina winner. He didn't seem to be himself last season but if his body is feeling good then he's more than capable of winning 37+ games. Through four starts this season, he has two wins and a 2.24 goals-against average.

Antti Niemi is Price's backup and he is 2-0-0 thus far. Last season in Montreal he had a .929 save percentage in 19 starts for the Canadiens. Price and Niemi could be a very effective defensive tandem this season in goal for Montreal.

The good news for punters is that the Canadiens are considered peripheral threats for a divisional title. They are priced out at $34.00. That's a line that value punters should sprinkle at this early stage of the season as it is one that might shorten in the weeks ahead.
