Match Preview

It’s been a while since a Sunday afternoon has played host to the two biggest games of the round, but that’s what’s happening in Round 21 as the Raiders and Roosters clash is followed by Melbourne taking on South Sydney in Gosford.

While Melbourne are the clear favourites for the minor premiership with a six-point gap at the top of the ladder, the Roosters, Raiders and Rabbitohs are all deadlocked on 28 points and jostling for second position in the run in to the finals.

Which makes this contest between the Raiders and Roosters all the more significant, with the winner moving two points clear of the loser - and from the Rabbitohs as well if Melbourne prevail.

The Roosters had been running hot and cold since a 30-24 win over Canberra during Magic Round at Suncorp, but they’ve hit top form again since a disappointing loss to the Cowboys, putting 48 and 58 points on the Knights and Titans respectively.

Trent Robinson knows that it’s all about timing your best form for a few weeks before finals starts, and once again, the Roosters appear to be doing that to perfection.

Unless Canberra can put a dent in their plans on Sunday. The Raiders have been extremely impressive for the entire season, spending the bulk of it inside the top four and now chasing a coveted top two finish.

Ricky Stuart’s side are on a four-match winning run and come into this showdown on the back of a huge 46-12 thrashing of the Warriors across the Tasman last week. Defence has been key for Canberra this season and they need another big performance in that department to hold out a free-scoring Roosters outfit.

Nick Cotric has been named in the backline as he returns from suspension, while Joey Leilua is among the reserves as he tries to comeback from a neck injury that has sidelined him since Round 7.

Canberra have won three of the last four encounters between the teams, but the Roosters managed to prevail 30-24 back in Round 9. This has all the makings of a classic, and at home, I think Canberra can come out on top. They are firing in both attack and defence and I’m backing them to get up for this one and prove they are genuine premiership contenders.

Match Odds

Sydney Roosters - $1.80
Canberra Raiders - $2.00
