Match Preview

An intriguing showdown awaits on Monday afternoon as the bottom-of-the-table Bulldogs come up against the struggling Dragons.

Canterbury have been poor all season - they simply don’t have the class or depth to compete for a finals spot this season, but they have been giving 100 per cent effort all year and that has seen them earn three wins over teams currently outside the eight: Tigers, Titans and Cowboys.

One thing they have on their side for this clash is their recent head-to-head over St. George Illawarra - the Bulldogs have won 13 of the last 15 meetings between the teams, but they will want to forget their last clash, which was a thumping 40-4 win for the Dragons back in Round 5.

It hasn’t gotten better for the Dragons since that result. In fact, Paul McGregor’s side are in the middle of an alarming slump that has seen them lost their last five matches and fall to 13th spot on the ladder.

The Dragons are still just two points away from the top eight, but a loss to the bottom-placed side will be a huge cause for concern.

Dylan Napa is the only player backing up from Origin for the Bulldogs, while Tyson Frizell and Ben Hunt are listed in the reserves for the Dragons and will come into the side if they are fit.

Both sides need a win - the Bulldogs can all but kiss goodbye their slim finals chances if they lose, while the Dragons will face an enormous uphill battle if they lose their sixth match on the trot. It should be close as both teams aren’t scoring many points, but I’ll lean on the side of Canterbury to post the upset.

Match Odds

St George Illawarra Dragons - $1.67
Canterbury Bulldogs - $2.25
