Prediction

Match Preview

The Tigers will be out for revenge in this clash after Canterbury upset them back in Round 3, but the main objective on Saturday night will be to preserve their newly-found top eight status.

Michael Maguire’s side moved into the eight on the back of last week’s convincing 28-4 victory over the Cowboys, but with a bunch of teams attempting to hunt them down, there’s absolutely no room for a slip up against one of the competition’s bottom teams.

It’s been another unpredictable season for the Tigers, but Maguire has transformed them into a more steely unit and a side that doesn’t go down without a fight. That was evident in their 28-26 comeback win over fellow finals hopefuls Newcastle a fortnight ago, but this is a match where Maguire will be hoping his side can make a statement as the regular season starts to draw to a close.

The Tigers will field an unchanged team to the side that steamrolled North Queensland last week.

Meanwhile, for Canterbury, it’s all about avoiding the wooden spoon these days - and they’re doing a good job of that, winning a handful of games over the last couple of months, including a big 16-8 victory over Penrith last week.

For all of their shortcomings in attack, the Bulldogs never throw in the towel and are proving to be a tough obstacle to overcome for teams looking to establish themselves in the eight.

Four points clear of the Titans in last place, the Bulldogs can actually still mathematically play finals football this season, but they need a miracle in winning all of their remaining games and hoping other results go their way.

That simply won’t happen, but I give them a decent chance of upsetting the Tigers on Saturday night. Canterbury love the grind and arm wrestle and know what it takes to beat them, having done so in Round 3. If the Tigers are serious about playing finals, this is a game they can’t afford to lose, but this could easily go right down to the wire.

Match Odds

Wests Tigers - $1.50
Canterbury Bulldogs - $2.60
