Prediction

Match Preview

It’s a must-win game for the Sharks as they continue their pursuit of a finals spot against the struggling Dragons on Sunday afternoon.

Cronulla tumbled out of the top eight during a poor stretch in the middle of the season, but briefly regained a spot inside it following a big win over the Rabbitohs.

However, just when Cronulla looked like they were riding some positive momentum, they collapsed against the Panthers last week, quickly falling behind 26-4, and although they were able to claw their way back to 26-20, the damage had already been done.

The loss saw the Sharks slip to ninth on the ladder, falling behind Brisbane and Penrith in the fight for the last two places in the eight.

There’s no room for error now for Cronulla, who have lost Andrew Fifita to a knee injury for this clash with Billy Magoulias coming in as his replacement. Matt Moylan also returns to the side from concussion.

Meanwhile, it’s been a season to forget for the Dragons, who are languishing in 14th place on the ladder and out of finals contention.

The Dragons did give their long-suffering fans something to cheer about last week, beating bottom-placed Gold Coast 40-28 to all but ensure they wouldn’t be picking up the wooden spoon in 2019.

But this game is all about the Sharks - and wouldn’t the Dragons love nothing more than to end their great rivals’ finals hopes. This is a game Cronulla simply can’t afford to lose - and at home, I think they’ll grind their way to a narrow victory.

Match Odds

Cronulla Sharks - $1.34
St George Illawarra Dragons - $3.25
